Misfire, DX is terminal?

Hi all. New here. I have an 08 Clubman S, 117k miles, bought it new back when they first came out, back when you had to pay a $3k bump to get to the front of the line. I have loved the car, kept up with the major stuff over the years including clutch, turbo, thermostat, water pump, fuel pump, walnut blasting, etc. Recently it threw an engine light code, had to do with thermostat. Which was only two years old. Also, the car had just started to seep oil. So i took it to a well-reviewed garage I hadn't used before, my regular guys got old and closed up.

Eventually I get a call back with a list of issues, including what they detected as misfire. I had not noticed this, that code did not show up on my scan tool, and the car seemed to be running fine. Anyway, I had the valve cover replaced, and they recommended starting with spark plugs, see if that helps the misfire. It did not. So the tech did some more tests, including leak down test, cylinder bore inspection, and wet compression test. Verdict: cylinder 4 bad, engine assembly will have to be replaced.

t deferred dealing with the cooling issue. When I got the car back, there were no codes showing but the service manager said they'd ocme back. And a few blocks from the shop they did -- not the cute little check engine but the BIG picture of the motor light. The car intermittently slipped into limp mode. I made it home but ti is not road worthy now. And there is still an oil leak.

I feel like I went to the doctor for a headache and got a prescription for brain surgery. The car ran when I took it in, when I picked it up it was terminally damaged. I don't question the finding that there are cylinder issues, I was supplied photos. Why is the vehicle so much worse for the wear than when I took it in?

Is engine replacement the only option? Thanks, if anyone has any insight I would appreciate it.

Post all BMW fault codes that (1) were found by the shop and by you and (2) return after clearing all fault codes with a scan tool.

Also, the shop diagnosis of "cylinder 4 bad" is vague. Ask shop what their diagnostic tests show is specifically wrong with cylinder 4.
