r53 clutch / flywheel

Sorry if answer is already in history, I could not find one. I don't see anything specific in the bentley manual outside of 'check for wear and damage'.

I just received a Valeo single mass flywheel & clutch kit (# 52151203) via Amazon /shipped UPS. The valeo packaging is terrible, the parts are loose inside the valeo box, there is damage (a 35lb flywheel will do that when not secured seperately). I am returning but now rethinking my plan, anyone shipping this kit risks in transit damage in my opinion.

might just stay with a LUK service kit and reuse the stock flywheel. Any thoughts here on resurfacing the flywheel ? photo attached, I do not detect any surface imperfections with my finger nail, the pressure plate does have surface steps, the clutch plate on that side is very worn, not too bad on the flywheel side.

IMO, it's not worth the potential future problems to resurface that flywheel which has seen quite a bit of excessive heat.

Dual mass flywheels have either springs or rubber pucks that provide shock cushioning to the driveline. Usually, once the flywheel overheats, those springs / rubbers can lose their effectiveness and you will get weird drivetrain issues. The overheating can happen during use or during the machining process. That is why it is usually not recommended to resurface a dual mass flywheel. Some have had success, but it is a risk you take.

I've been happy with the ClutchMasters FX100 kit in my tuned R55 Clubman. Looks like they have some nice options for the R53:

As others have said a dual mass flywheel is not really built to be serviced and machined. Due to its design, it unfortunately will not last forever like a classic solid flywheel which can be continually refreshed.

I had the same Valeo kit (52151203) shipped up to Canada from RockAuto, arrived perfectly, installed fine and have not had an issue. If you plan on keeping the car for a long time, highly recommend a solid flywheel for an easier future.
