Hey all, as normal, I started having an issue with my R60 and when I couldn't find it searching various forums I decided to try my luck with a thread. My wife has a 2013 Mini Countryman JCW R60, which has been running great in general. The vacuum pump recently disintegrated internally, and I had to replace it as it obviously caused a lack of braking. I replaced that and all seemed fine, however, now it appears that there is absolutely no heat coming from the heater. It had worked perfectly fine before this. I have been trying to figure out what it could be and possibly if there are relays, switches, sensors, etc. that may also be interfering with this. Below is some of the troubleshooting I have attempted to identify what is going on. It has NOT had any overheat alarms or issues during all this time.
1. Adding Coolant to the system and using the bleed port on the top of the thermostat assembly, to allow any air to escape. No change.
2. Felt the coolant lines of the inlet and outlet of the heater core going into the firewall on the engine side. Both felt, warm/hot to the touch depending on length of time car has been running.
3. Confirmed engine fan kicks on at approx. 107C(225F) and cools engine down to mid around 93C(200F) Using scan tool and ECT live value.
4. Confirmed no leaks appear to be anywhere on the vehicle for coolant.
5. Moved heater temperature up and down to maximums, no change.
6. Set heater to "auto" and moved temps up down, no change.
7. Had coolant bleed screw open while engine warms up to max 108C(225F), while keeping topped off. No change to heater.
Would like to know if there are more onboard diagnostics that could be had? Any next steps? Any sensors that could be checked? Any additional bleed ports for coolant? Any onboard HVAC diagnostics troubleshooting options? My diagnostics so far has only been with a Scan tool that has some addtional BMW options for it but still nothing very invasive.
It's seems very suspicious that the issue appeared to happen after fixing the vacuum pump. Wondering if anything could have gotten tripped during that time, or if some reset needs to occur. Thanks in advance for any advice. I'd really like to get this sorted, as we've had a cold snap here and obviously wife is not happy with a car without heat. I included a pic of the HVAC controls in case it helps with identification for troubleshooting.
You've gone through all that I would've thought to do.
Assuming you are getting 0 faults on your scanner? I know my scanner will show IHKA (climate control system) group faults. Note that faults can be present without a check engine light. Next suggestion was going to be vacuum-operated blend doors, but I guess these are dc motors not vacuum so that's not it. Do you get any airflow from the vents, it's just not hot?
Maybe someone knows how to do the onboard diagnostics for the auto-climate HVAC system? That would be immensely helpful. Or really anything at this point.
Have you checked to see if the hoses going to the heater core are hot and the outlet warm?
-If hot in / warm out: you may have a blend door issue.
-If hot in / cool out: you may have a blockage in the heater core
-if both hoses are cool: you may have a bad HVAC control valve
Edit did you try to shut off auto temp and AC and click the dash vent button then use the manual heat setting? because in your pic you have auto defrost with a/c on. It might be the hvac air temp sensor giving you issues
