Why does my Mini engine smell like a bakery suddenly?

Hi F series fam!

Ive got the B46 engine I believe in my 2014 F56 MCS manual. Last few months it stinks in my car on cold starts. I read online that early F56 cars had ac evaporator issues which allowed mold to build up? Anyhow, not sure its related but, today on the highway the car emitted a sweet smell from the AC vents, like a bakery. Soon after, white vapor or smoke began to come out of AC Vents too whenever I pressed on the accelerator. Im having the car towed back home (was on the way to a frends house) as Im nervous to drive it now.

There are no codes, no check engine light and I googled up and down and cant find anything on an F56 with these symptoms, only older R-series Mini's. On the R-series Mini's, they say its the "heat exchanger" or the "head gasket" thats typically goes bad and causes these symptoms. Is it the same for the F-series B46 cars?

Anyone have any insights for me? Im sure the dealership will want a small fortune to diagnose and/or repair so will try to fix this myself once I figure out whats gone wrong with the car. (Full disclosure: I recently did the spark plugs with a torque wrench, could I have damaged anything that might be causing this?)

A sweet smell, and steam coming from the vents... These items would tell me the heater core has cracked.

Heater core would suck. Head gasket would be even worse. Hope it's NOT the head gasket. I'd take heater core over head gasket ANY day.

Good luck! When I smell sweet on a car, I go looking for coolant.

Just wrapping up this thread, it ended up being the Oil Filter Housing that gave out. Seems to be quite common on these cars and even on some other brands. Was a fair bit of labor to get things out of the way and get this done, but I was able to replace the OFH myself.

Glad to hear it wasn't a heater core, but sucks that yet another OFH bites the dust. Good thing you had it towed home vs trying to drive it and burning up the engine! Just replaced my failed unit on my F54 a few weeks ago...glad I have a little extra space to get into mine.

Thanks for the head up on the smell and symptoms of the Oil filter Housing Failure.
