Raditor fan works but won't turn on
Raditor fan works but won't turn on
About a year ago I posted about this issues. I put together a band-aid fix but that is now causing it's own problems so I'm back to square one.
I have a 2010 MINI Cooper base. The radiator fan does not turn on and the engine will start to overheat. I've avoided disaster so far by monitoring coolant temps. Last year I did some tests and found that the radiator fan does work. I was able to use INPA to turn the radiator fan on manually (I can't remember for sure but it may have shut off again a few seconds after turning it on with INPA, I can't get INPA to connect to the car right now so I can't check on that at the moment). Turning on the AC does not cause the fan to turn on either.
I got tired of chasing this issue last year so I just installed a relay activated switch so I could manually turn the fan on. This worked ok for awhile unless I forgot to turn it on or off lol. Well recently I noticed a parasitic draw was killing my battery. It's probably safe to assume that is caused by my cheap fan fix. I would like to actually solve this issue instead of just working around it now. I'm hoping someone has any idea what could cause this. It's almost as if the fan works but the ECU is failing to tell the fan to turn on (I did replace the coolant temp sensor and verified that it is reading accurately using an OBD connection). Any insight is appreciated.
