R56 Oooo that smell...
Oooo that smell...
Hi all
I was getting on the freeway and put the pedal to the metal. In regular auto mode. I clicked on the fan and smelled what could be described as oily or rubbery. I cracked the passenger window and the smell was more intense. This went on for a couple of minutes and then abated. I concluded it had to be me (my car)
Does anyone think it was the friction wheel? This is the first time I had this symptom. I only hammer it like this when getting on the fwy.
It's pushing 80K
Car had been sitting for a couple hours after a 30 min drive.
I know the tensioner disengages the pump when the engine is cold. It takes only a couple minutes to reach the freeway, so I'm thinking slippage with high RPM's.
Comments?
TIA

Year? Engine (S or non-S)?
For the non-S, remove the upper heat shield and look for oil leaks at the oil filter manifold and where the cylinder head meets the engine block. Also check your oil pan gasket, crankshaft hub seal, & vacuum pump (where it mounts the the cylinder head) for oil leakage
If I remember correctly, the water pump on North American MINIs runs all the time. Other markets had the electrically controlled friction wheel.

You are correct. I found subsequently water pump on North American MINIs run all the time.
I took a cursory look at the vacuum Pump and it was dry, as well as the cylinder head.
