RoadTop Carplay install
I decided to add the RoadTop Carplay retrofit box to our 2017 F54 after driving a Scooby with Carplay.. Still playing with it, but other than a lot of stuff in a *really* tight space, it's pretty fun.
First time, everything worked fine, but no sound. They tell you (in broken/misprinted language) that a BMW 1/2/3/4 series needs to plug into the Aux-in. It turns out there is a 'mic' receptacle in the same wire wrap. I tried the Aux-in reroute (after trying to figure out how to get it there with the screen in place), then thought I'd try the 'mic' version. Plugged the Aux-in to the 'mic' and it worked fine. I supposed that's due to the need to standardize, but it would have been nice to include that into the instructions. Much simpler and cleaner. Now to figure out how I stuffed all that stuff back there last time so I can get it to fit...
Roadtop is available from several vendors, I went cheap with AliExpress. Accidentally ordered the CIC vs NBT box (type was listed under "color"), but eventually got the product I needed for the car.
Screen removal notes:
Unlike the F55/56, our F54 trim ring removes by twisting counter clockwise - no pins to remove. Fortunately I discovered that before I snapped it off.
After removing the top center trim piece (pries out, dash is very forgiving), there's a small hole that provides access to a tab. Note that tab is just a plastic locking mechanism. The screen is held in place by two quite strong clips. I ended up snapping the tab off after a few tries, but it doesn't seem to do much. So don't push down hard, but pull hard.
Tried to upload photos, but they are too big, or I just can't figure it out.

Thats awesome! When you have carplay and then dont have it in another car, you feel like you are missing out.
Yes on those system you have to watch out for the NBT and NBT EVO. Gets tricky. CIC and CCC are the gen 2 MINI set up. Gen 3 uses the NBT and NBT Evo. Then later in the F56 that all got carplay.
