Lug nut issue

Picked up a set of Motegi mr119 17x7. Currently I have 15mm spacer on rear and 5 mm spacer in front on stock spider web wheels. I tried checking to see if the screws would fit the Motegi wheels but they don’t. What do I do. Should I grind all the screws to fit? Or do I need to get 16 new screws the right length and the right size?

the chrome screw that I laid flat on the hub cap is a lock screw that I have but I hate it because the key socket for them keeps breaking. But that’s the only screw that fits. I went ahead and grabbed a 17mm screw for all of them and it worked (this was for my old drag dr33 wheels). Than I put the screws (17mm) in these wheels and they don’t fit. Only the weird lock screw ones fit.

It looks to me like you'll need to buy new bolts. I suspect you'll have trouble getting a socket onto the ones you have even if you're able to grind them down enough to fit, and grinding them down doesn't sound like a great solution anyway.

The locking lug nut is tapered. The other lug nut appears to be flat and not inserting all the way into the wheel?

Yes, that’s what I’m trying to say. I don’t want to use the locking screw since the lock socket always cracks. The regular screw which is the 17mm hex does not fit in the hole of the wheel

Unless I'm misunderstanding, you need tapered lug nuts for those particular wheels. For instance, my R53 lug nuts are all tapered.

You would need 16 new lug bolts, and most likely different lengths front and rear due to the spacers. Also make sure they have the correct seat for your wheels as it might not be the same as the factory lugs.

Search for “Tuner” lug nuts/bolts which are often needed with aftermarket wheels. There is also a “socketed” version which are similar to an Allen or Torx bolt, but I don’t know if the lugs or removal tool is any stronger.

I would search for reviews on something good and reputable.

I believe all the wheels he has mentioned have conical seats. As long as it isn't a late production 2006, the bolts are M12x1.5. Otherwise they are M14x1.25.

I think there should be some wiggle room on length since the hubs are drilled all the way through, but I've never messed with spacers or extended lug bolts - only extended studs.

Agreed on the tuner style bolts. I think you may end up with something splined to make things fit. They often come with a thin-wall socket though, so don't go banging them on with an impact like a trained gorilla.

Do you have spacers installed? I have 15mm spacers and 5 mm spacers. Rear to front. Wondering if those screws you linked would work for me.

So I did some research, let me know if I did my calculations right.

The current stock r53 screw length size and stuff is 12x1.5x25.
If I install a 15 mm spacer, would the "25" go up to 40?
And if I install just a 5 mm spacer, the "25" would go up to 30?

If thats the case;
Amazon Amazon
I found this on amazon, wondering if this would work. Let me know!

I have 5mm but my rims take up alittle more than oem rims do too.. I feel they'd be safe upto 10mm and 15mm might be a close..

First, they aren't called "screws". They are called lug bolts, lug nuts, and/or lug studs. This will help with your researching.

Yes, if the lug bolt is 25mm long. If they worked before, and you add a 15mm spacer, you would now need at least a 40mm long bolt.
Other, better option, is to install lug studs. Get long ones, then you don't have to worry whether or not you get full thread seating with a lug bolt, you just use lug nuts and make sure they engage at least 12mm deep worth of threads.

Instead of going bolts why not put studs on it? I had the longer bolts on my clubman and tire changes were a bit of fun, with spacers. So I went with studs on the R53.
Studs -
Amazon Amazon

Lug Nuts -
Amazon Amazon

your right, I can just do studs. But I know I need to torque it and I’m just afraid that In the worst case I need to remove the studs the hex will round since it requires a lot of torque to install/remove. Also I’d also need to get nuts for the car. Idk I think the screws are just fine I just need to find the right length!

i installed one motegi wheel last night and this was the front wheel which has a 5mm spacer. The current lug bolt I have for the stock wheel was just like a 1/4” shorter than the tuner screws. Idk if the tuner screws would be fine if I put it in the back? I’m also wondering if the lug bolts are LONGER than they should. Cause technically if my math was right I should be on the money with the length of the bolts. 25+15=40
25+5=30
the tuner lug bolt has a 40mm shank. That should be fine. I guess I’m just nervous I will be running a shorter shank bolt apposed to what I’ve been running which is probably a 50 shank in the rear and a 35 shank in the front. Idk I will be putting it on today and so I will measure it and ill let you all know!

You torque the studs to 20-25 ft/lbs and the lugs to 90 ft/lbs. 25ft/lbs isn’t much at all and only reason I would see to remove them would be to replace the wheel bearing or brakes.

+1 for stud conversion

But it's personal preference I guess,
in my case I did the unpopular thing and kept the M14x1.25 size instead of the M12x1.5 conversion and went with 68mm length because I don't like the look when they're overly long.

Sucked to be me. I put it on my car and I didn’t like the wheels. The fitment was PERFECT! But I’m just not a fan of black wheels. I’m a more white wheels guy which my older wheels were white. Ended up giving the wheels to my brother and he put it on his Miata nb which is also supercharged. Coincidence. Appreciate all your guys help!
