R53 JCW Intercooler Cover...

...or,
in BMW parlance: "sealing plate".

Just a headsup reminder that these are still available from the dealer.

If you, like me, plan on keeping the stock i/c, then it might be a good idea to grab one of these while they're still around.

Mine wasn't in too bad of shape, although it does have a bit of yellowing, I've seen much worse on some cars where it's been rubbed black.

Nice to open the box to see such a pristine 'n clean one!

Just picked it up today from my local who is MINI of Kennesaw,
actually arrived last week...

...but,
I was working out of town.

Took almost a month to get here from Germany.

Thanks for prompting me to order that. Did the screws come with it? Not 100% sure but I think the foam seal has some part in marring the gel badge. Mine is a little disintegrated in that area. Both will probably go NLA like everything else. $30 https://new.minimania.com/part/NMX76...r-Hood-R52-R53

Nope on the screws.

They make a killing on various bolts 'n fasteners like astronomical YOWZA! in some cases like with the valve cover bolts which are a ridiculous price but I bit the bullet when I first got my car because those bolts were slightly rusty...

R53 JCW Intercooler Cover...-rrvjnif.jpg

...have since accumulated many spares from junkyard cars that still had good ones.

Stainless steel alternates a good option these days though,
might get a set at some point.

https://orranje.co.uk/product/orranj...it-r53-r52-r50

Similarly,
I was astounded with shock when I saw the condition of the bolt for my pass. side motor mount when I changed it out,
not too bad at $11, but still an eleven dollar bolt is a bit pricey!

I agree that the foam seal is the culprit for marring, in conjunction with bonnet alignment too I reckon,
dealer has it slightly cheaper...

R53 JCW Intercooler Cover...-wdtdmap.png

...but again,
$30 for a stupid foam strip!

May try and investigate different varieties of foam to find a possible high quality alternate instead of buying the OE part and just use 3M VHB tape to affix it.

I used regular foam strips, available at the local hardware store. It has been sitting in my hot engine bay for a while now...Sticks like a champ

For the bolts I resorted at stainless hex bolts. I didnt want to dish out that amount of money for some bolts...

Nice find and great info on this page! The works sticker was faded on my GP, and a bit of 40% acetone took off the black marring and made look almost brand new... there's still a bit of yellowing though!

For the stainless bolts, did you remove the bushing from the original bolts? I'd love to use stainless.

Yes, they slide off with a bit of persuasion and then reuse them for the stainless bolts. The only thing which you will be missing are the longer bolts which also acts as a guide for 2 cables.

Stainless bolts M6 x 35mm
I bought these stainless bolts
URL: https://rb.gy/dhu3am (dutch site, so use google translate)

Specs
DIN 912
M6 x L 35mm
5mm hex bolt
Quality : RVS / INOX A4

Stainless washers M8
And these stainless washers
URL: https://rb.gy/powryc (dutch site, so use google translate)

Specs:
M8
DIN 125A
Quality : RVS / INOX A2

D1 ≈ (inner diameter) 8,4mm
D2 ≈ (outer diameter) 16,0mm
H ≈ (thickness) 1,6mm

[edit]
Rubber rings
I bought the rubber rings on eBay > https://www.ebay.com/itm/124727815568

Thanks for the information. Going to be replacing the valve cover shortly and will use stainless.

I am a little worried about stainless into the alloy of the head.

I'm not sure what sort of persuasion you used to get the collars/bushings off the screw for re-use, but I assume it was something like the way I did it. I used a large pair of Vice-grips to squeeze across the collar and screw tip to force the collar off. Then I used an 11mm socket and a hammer to drive the collar onto a replacement screw.

I'm wondering if the JCW sticker itself is sold anywhere... I found the JCW airbox logo as a separate part, but not this... Was considering buying a used S intercooler cover, and painting it body color and slapping a sticker on, instead of ruining my current JCW cover.

I don't think that it is available as a separate piece from the factory.

There are reproductions out there now, altho a bit pricey all in after Royal Mail postage rates are included in final price...
