2006 mini s turbo convertible top motor running but wont close
2006 mini s turbo convertible top motor running but wont close. Top opens with no issue but needs manual assistance to start the closing sequence. I have to hold down the close button and pull up manually on the roof frame until it gets past a certain point and then it will close on its own. I have checked the power steering fluid as I was informed that the roof operation uses that fluid as a "hydraulic" type of fluid but it was full. I did notice before it stopped working on its own that it was operating slower than normal then it just crapped out entirely.
The top hydraulics have their own reservoir, its nothing to do with the power steering. The reservoir is attached to the pump in the back left part of the trunk. Might have to take the tail light out to get to it to check (bit fiddley, but not hard to do). The fluid used may be the same spec as the power steering fluid (I dont know), but the systems are not connected. BMW/Mini sell a convertible specific hydraulic fluid, part number 54340394395
Filling instructions here but you shouldnt have to remove it and fill it vertically if you can get a large syringe or turkey baster to fill it in place:

(keep following the "next page" arrows)
Next gen convertible is essentially the same I think...
Another thing that comes to mind is that the hydraulic levels might be fine but there could be excessive friction in the frame joints that is preventing the hydraulics getting it moving, so if thats possible clean and lube the pivot points. Probably a good idea in any case.
Is the hydraulic system actually doing anything to push the roof shut at some point or is it just gravity? You probably dont want a leaky hydraulic system spraying fluid all over the place back there...

I had similar problem with my R52. It was starting to close and then give up 1/3 of the way and was going back down.
Blaster White Lithium Grease & Baster Silicone Lube fixed the problem for me. Since then, I lube it every 6 months, and no issues.
I did exactly as the video below, (convertible top maintenance - Goss's Garage on youtube)
I hope that would work for you.
