Warning about 2011 R56 on AutoTrader

Hello everyone,
I'm new the the forum and I'm in the market for a r56 S with low miles and I don't want to spend more than 11k.; I started my search on Auto trader and I thought I found the one! I was pretty happy but before I purchase any car I always do a crazy amount of research to see if I can find out any other information not listed on the CarFax.

I contacted the seller and asked him about the number of owners. When I tried to run a CarFax report with the vin number that was provided on auto trader it turns out that it was an invalid vin number. Red Flag #1. When I spoke to the sell and told him about the invalid vin number he mentioned that it was a typo... We talk price for a little while and I told him that I'd contact him the next day if I could make the numbers work. I really wanted the car it had all the options I wanted and it has very low miles. I was about to contact the seller to let him know that I was ready to make arrangements to come pick up the car but before I reached back out to the seller I decided to do a bit more research and I'm glad I did.

Turns out this guy has a long history of switch vin numbers on some of the cars he sell, and he has a recorded of trying to sell stolen cars. I not saying this car is stolen but I've found enough information to stop me from trying to purchase this car. Just wanted to share my finding so no one gets burned. My Mini Cooper R56 S search continues.

I searched for 3 to 4 months before I bought mine. Glad I waited and got the one I did. Love the car and only had to fix A/C after purchase. Take your time and get the one you want. Also Welcome to the forum.

Thanks @DJewell for the advise. I'm going to wait until I find the right one. The wait is killing me cause I want one now! Soon as I find the one I'll make sure to post some pics of my R56.

Take your time and be ready to travel. I drove 2hrs north to get my 2003 MCS because of the deal and the fact the seller did not know what he had.
