OEM Euro-style Center Armrest - Any Effect on How You Shift Manual Transmission?
Would like to hear from anyone who has installed the OEM aftermarket "Euro-style" center console on their vehicle with manual transmission. I've read (from the forums) that there is some small interaction with the parking brake - I think I can live with that. I would like to understand if it has affected the way that you shift the manual transmission? I know that there are not any direct interferences, but I'm wondering if you have to shift "differently" in any way - hand position, arm/elbow position, etc. I've had other cars with manual transmissions and center consoles - some allowed for very natural shifting, some did not. Appreciate all responses, thanks.
I assume you are refering to this one?

I had it installed in my previous Clubman, and I have the factory armrest in my current Clubman. The factory armrest is 11ty-billion times better than the dealer one above. The dealer armrest flips up, but doesn't have a detent to hold it in the raised position. With it in the lowered position, you have to shift with an overhand grip on the shifter. For me, it was a little uncomfortable. With it in the raised position, it would slowly droop and eventually be in the way of shifting.
I would suggest getting all the parts to retrofit the factory style armrest. The install would be a little bit more involved, but it is a MUCH Better design.

Nik - thanks, this is exactly what I was trying to understand (and what I was kind of concerned about). I've seen a couple of other posts (about retrofitting a factory armrest). My wife also has a Mini (although it is automatic transmission), so I am familiar with that armrest (and the issues - i.e., difficulty in keeping it closed).
If it was going into an automatic car, I would recommend the dealer armrest, since there isn't any shifting to get in the way.
With the factory armrest, I will flip it up while driving around town to keep it out of the way, and then drop in when I get on the highway to help with comfort while cruising.
