Upgrading from the h/k factory system, factory headunit?

So I think I've decided that I want to upgrade from the factory h/k system in my 05 Cooper S. I have a good idea of what I want to do when it comes to amps and speakers, but I do want to keep the factory headunit so it looks stock. From what I understand though, the h/k system uses dsp or some form of equalization. Is this built into the headunit? If it is, can it be bypassed? Or is it separate box or built into the amps or something? Is the h/k equalization going to be a pain to get rid of?

The same head unit was used for both HK and non HK systems. As far as I know, the DSP is in the HK amp, and DSP settings are available on the head unit only when connected to it. MINI also had an accessory DSP upgrade kit available for the 1st gens with non HK.

Adding amps and speakers to the Factory head unit shouldn’t be a problem with the right components. The problem would be in trying to use an aftermarket head unit with the HK amp/system. The only way I’ve seen to do this was to use an aftermarket interface like the the HK Enabler from the UK.

Got it, so in that case, when I replace the amplifier, the eq presets in the head unit would disappear? Like the "mini hk" "flat", "electronic" whatever else is there? Or is that built into the headunit?

If you're gonna ditch the whole system but keep the head unit, you wont be happy, thats the weak link in the stereo. You'll have way more adjustability with an aftermarket HU and the sound difference with pre-outs vs having to use a low level line converter to have RCA's to run the sub amp is huge. Theres plenty of plain looking HU's out there to maintain a relatively stock look. Just my opinion and trying to help.

Not sure where it resides, but the presets don’t show up on the radio when used with the base system so it at least needs some kind of signal from the HK amp to be active and most likely won’t be available when connected to an aftermarket amp.

What other options do you have with your MINI? I think the NAV voice and warning sounds for the parking sensors both need the Factory radio to function.

I recently ran into this issue with wiring the factory HK amp to the aftermarket HU. Which option is better in your opinion, pre-out or LOC? Can you shed some light on how it can be done? Thanks in advance!
