In May we got a 2011 Cooper S with 106000 miles. About a month ago, a whining sound started coming from the passenger side of the engine. At around the same time, the engine starting running hot and found that there was a constant coolant leak. We took it to a shop and they replaced the water pump and also fixed a valve cover gasket because of a slight oil leak. After getting the car back on Saturday, the engine now has a knock or rattle that occurs in a constant pattern. The whining is now more prominent and happens even when stopped as opposed to before when it only occurred when slowing down. The engine light now comes on as well.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

Did they change the drive belt and the friction wheel? If the engine light is on, you should find out what codes are there.

 

If they did, they did not inform us. There is no engine light, but there is an update. As I was driving right before posting this, the red battery light came on for the first time. It seems like this car is just falling apart on me.
