Charcoal in Air Cleaner Box

Replacing the air filter in my base 2009 and found some small black rocks in the air box. Is it charcoal? is it suppose to be there?

That is most definitely not supposed to be in there, and I’m struggling to figure out how it did get in there. Rocks kicked up from the road through the intake, maybe?

In any case I’d clean them all out.

Why do you think that is charcoal? It just looks like rocks to me.

Yep, not going to be there, maybe former owner put them there or a mouse? Looks like just plain rocks to me also.
