Missed it by THAT much. Lol I've been searching all over waiting for the old logo JCW carbon fiber shift **** to pop up somewhere - and it finally did when I was at work. I have all the other pieces with the old logo except the shift ****. Hope another one pops up soon!

You have a good eye - yes, that is the R56 steering wheel insert. I am putting on the thicker GP2 steering wheel with red stitching. I have a 2008 R52 S Sidewalk that I'm 'updating' to a Sidewalk GP 1.5. Like you, I have had trouble finding all the carbon fiber trim pieces over the past year. I found that steering wheel insert on Ebay and had to buy the entire steering wheel just for that trim piece and the black multifunction controls I needed also. I prefer the old style logo since 2008 was the transition year from old to new logo design. What trim pieces are you hunting for? I am searching all the time for those pieces and run across ones I already have frequently. I can let you know if one of yours becomes available if you will do the same for me.

As a heads up the R56 steering will won’t work. The spline is completely different on the 1st and 2nd gen

Are you positive about that? I have read people putting the GP2 steering wheel on a Gen1. Have even heard of F series steering wheels on Gen1s also. There has to be a way to adapt it on a Gen1. I put an R56 steering wheel on my other R53 a couple years ago and didn't have any trouble with it. I hated the 2 spoke steering wheel - was really dated.

Yes. I’ve seen the F56 wheel modified to fit. The wheel was modified to a 20.6mm opening. As far as the R56 wheel to R53 it will not work. The spline is different and you’d need a machine shop to machine it to match and add a key way slot.

Unless I’m wrong but I have a R53 3 spoke and R56 3 spoke I can snap photos of and they’re different (upgraded to JCW wheels so I have the original ones laying around). But hey, if you’ve done it that’s more than I’ve tried

The airbag won’t work either as one of them has two plugs and the other only has one.

Just not sure how comfortable I’d be with a machined spline or enlarged center bore on a steering wheel.

I'm pretty sure the 3 spoke wheel I put on my R53 was from an R56 as I wanted to get rid of all the silver in the interior so went with the black ring around the MINI logo in the center airbag cover and didn't have trouble connecting the airbag. I'll have to take some pics in morning. Maybe the difference is with the R56 refresh?? That would make sense.

I’m very curious to see this. All R56 regardless of pre or post lci have the same style airbag connectors.

This is my spare car - a 2002 R53. Hated the 2 spoke so about 3 years ago bought an R56 wheel and swapped them out and put in the wood dash at same time. It was a while ago but don't remember it being very difficult if you are looking to do something similar. Now that I think of it, I did have to file down the keyhole you mentioned to make it bigger for the clock spring to work. Think it only took a couple hours to swap out.
