R50/53 Rattle

Rattle

Fairly loud metallic rattle from front of engine. 90,000 miles.

Timing Chain Tensioner
Or
Belt Tensioner

Usually....
Under the Cam/Valve cover = Timing Chain Tensioner
In front, but outside the engine itself = Belt Tensioner

Get yourself an automotive stethoscope if you can't pinpoint it by ear.

You might also want to check the heat shields immediately behind the engine. They sometimes are not affixed properly.

If it’s truly on the front then it’s the timing chain tensioner. Does it rattle all the time or just after startup for a while?
