R50/53 Serpentine Belt/idler/tensioner...should I change?
Serpentine Belt/idler/tensioner...should I change?
I am replacing my alternator and was wondering if I should change these items out now. I am becoming a bigger and bigger fan of if it's not broken then don't fix it over the years but would like your thoughts.
I am not going to pay for OEM parts but want to know what brands people have had luck with. I am *assuming* that the supercharger pulley is stock as well.
Thanks

I replaced my alternator this past summer, I replaced the belt that had 30,000 miles on it, and wish I had replaced my idler pulley. I'm not sure I'd bother with the tensioner.
I bought this alternator and as far as I can tell it's the same as OEM.
I also replaced my crank position sensor o-ring. Mine was leaking, but it's $5 and easy to get to when the car is in service mode.

Thanks for this. 144k....it's not the original belt. Notice that the belt and pulleys seem to have a "line" in the middle of them. I'd like to say "groove" but I can't see that far.
If you were going to go non OEM with the idler, what would you use? I usually go with Dayco or Gates.
I went with this alternator:
Good reviews and new construction supposedly. Price is right. Not sure how much faith I'd put into these reviews since I don't know if the alternator will go the distance.

If you don’t know how old the belt and tensioner are, it would be best to replace them. The idler pulley is important too, though probably a less common failure.
If the tensioner or belt go, you’ll be dead in the water. An idler pulley will scream for attention letting you know it’s time. Check the belt for cracks and the tensioner for play. It starts to fail as the little strut loses its ability to dampen.
There will be a low level continuous bell sound. I have the same line in the middle of my belt, don't think is't anything to worry about, I had it on my last belt that was changed due to a 15% SC pulley change. I currently have 30K on my current belt with the same line down the middle.

Hmmmm, not as similar sounding as I hoped. But I plan on changing it as well regardless.
Just a thought, maybe the line is from the idler pulley, if the line is a groove then probably not. But if it is more of a bump it might be from that since the idle is two pieces placed together.

It is from the Idler Pulley, nothing to worry about. It's hard to describe the sound of the pulley failing, it's like a shrill sound. When mine went, I'd would be sitting hearing a Shrill type whine, very faint. Just to be clear, even after you change the Idler Pulley, that line will come back, it's not a problem or defect.
I just replaced my alternator, put in a new belt (old one only had 25k on it) and bought an idler as a matter of course, since I was that far away from it, I was very happy to find that the idler pulley was failing, its one bolt, and ~$20 bucks of good insurance. The tensioner was almost near the end of its travel before I started, and close to the other end of travel after a new idler and belt. I used a Gates HD (green back) belt, it should last longer than I'm willing to let it stay on the car
Put a new idler pulley in, its cheap insurance.
JMHO,

JMHO,
I've replaced many aftermarket failed alternators, so I'd go with OEM

check the idler and replace if the bearing isn't smooth.
The pulley is just for fun, but the best bang for the buck
