You can switch stock head units between cars.
My wife wanted the cassette head unit in my MCS so she could listen to books on tape. Brecht MINI's service department didn't know if the head units had security codes that would have to be reprogrammed, but my MA, Mike Davis, said they don't. So using the how to instructions on the Motoring Files website, I switched the head units in my MCS and my wife's MC CVT. The head units DON"T have any security codes to program. I just unplugged the units, moved them to the other car and plugged them in again. They worked immediately including controlling the CD changer.

thats good to know, I am planning to switch the head unit from my 05 S into my daughters 03 cooper. Since the new head unit will play mp3's and I am upgrading the unit anyway we might as well get the most use out of the newest stuff.
thanks for posting that.

Yeah, I've been thinking that I'll try out the stock HU and if I can't live without my current Kenwood, I'll put the Kenwood in....then sell the '05 to someone with an older cooper or MCS who wants MP3 capability.
