So i may make myself out as a fool here but being new to minis i am confused and worried.
my oil indicator is not on on my dashboard/gauge though comes on momentarily when starting the car (obviously)
but when i remove the dipstick all i see is what i can only say is minor amounts of residue from the dipstick tube
is that colored end supposed to show oil like “normal” dipsticks do?
ive tried attaching a picture but its giving me problems
If that little bit of dark stain at the tip of the dip stick is from the crank case, it looks like time to change the oil and you're at least a quart low and more than likely more than that. When was it last changed? Also, I sure wouldn't trust the oil gauge 100%, you should be physically checking the level on a regular basis.
That's real low! Put a quart of oil in it before you drive it anywhere. Then have the oil and filter changed right away.
There should be oil up on the top bulb on the dipstick.
You should check the oil every time you get gasoline, until you get a sense of how fast it consumes oil.
Its is time or rather about 1000 under the sticker from the last oil change prior to me buying it. I figured from common sense and what i have read about mini's dumping a quart of oil when its time to change that, it was indeed time. I planned on tossing a quart in tomorrow and chaning this weekend. Im just looking at the dipstick wonder where the F is the oil and why isnt the oil level indicator on, but have read here that once the mini throws that warning light, its too late.
The top bulb is the maximum indicator, the lower bulb is the minimum indicator, as long as the oil level is near the top bulb on the dipstick your oil level is OK.
There is no oil level indicator light on series two and older MINIs, just a low oil pressure light, you do not want to see that.
I change my oil every 5,000 miles, I have to add a quart between changes.
just ran a mile down the road to auto zone and grabbed some mobile 1 synthetic, 2 quarts, dropped a quart in it, and drove the mile back home, will check the oil level in the morning b4 i head to work and add accordingly.
my oil siphon filter and oil comes this weekend so it is getting a complete change this weekend.
thanks for the clarification guys, i mean i knew the drip stick should show oil but that stupid orange grainy plastic thing they put on the end of the dipstick was messing with me because i couldnt tell if the residue was that, or all the oil it would normally show.
now i know
Your MINI does not have an oil level light. When you see that oil light it is because you have low oil pressure. That is a sure way to damage your engine & believe me you do not want to have to pay for a replacement. Get in the habit of pulling the dipstick once a week at least. Hope all goes well with your oil change.
thanks guys, did an oil change, most retarded oil filter location i have ever seen, i can see the oil on the oil level indicator/dip stick now, but good god that orange thing on the end makes it hard to really see if there is oil.
yeah lets make it a color and material that makes seeing the oil level hard. ugh..
put new NGK plugs in while i was there. didnt really need them from what i could see but wth, i wanted to know it has new plugs. -pregapped to pretty much 29 on all plugs out of the box.. the ones that were in there were a lot bigger gap than that.
