MPG, US or Imperial Gallons?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can confirm whether MPG on the trip computer is US gallons (3.8 litres) or Imperial gallons (4.5 litres)?

I suspect it's Imperial.

It's probably US gallons as not even the UK uses Imperial gallons very much any more?

Why do you think so? Is it displaying about 15% higher mpg than what you experience? MINI USA decides what measure units are programmed into US spec MINI. Not even gas stations in the UK use imperial gallon (they use litre).

I believe it's Imperial, I did Toronto - Washington DC - Toronto last weekend and averaged 43.7mpg, it must be Imperial.

I'm a European by the way and we always use litres (as we do in Canada) but gas mileage is always quoted in Imperial MPG, nowhere in Europe have I ever seen USG used.

Why the US ever felt it necessary to have a different volume for a gallon (8 pints) is beyond me.

No clue on your question, but I assume it's US gal.

As an aside, my experience w/ trip computer MPG is that they are almost never accurate, always overstating mpg. Our 2015 Nissan Altima is never closer than 2-3 mpg. Honda Accords before that, same. Our 2017 MC S convertible is more accurate than any other car we've owned, sometimes within 0.1 other times 2.5 mpg off. Even when I'm super careful gassing up, the results are never consistent. If you really want to know, check the old fashioned way, set trip meter to 0 when you gas up, then do the math when you fill up again.

Checked the old fashioned way, my mpg runs from 26.5 to a best of 34.9 mpg, all depending upon right foot, the amount of time in sport mode, and where I'm driving. The general average 28.5 - 30.5 mpg.

Enjoy your Mini.

Is your car MINI Canada specification? The business unit in each country decides the specification of their cars. For the US, MINI USA would choose to use US gallons. For Canada, the measurement units would be the choice by MINI Canada. In Canada, is the term "gallon" generally understood to mean Imperial gallon?
