R50/53 Can you buy it before you get it?
Situation:
1. My MCS is in the U.S. (I think off loaded from the Aida 11/22).
2. Don't know if it wil get to Chicago, prepped, and deal closed by 11/30.
3. Sales tax goes up 1% 12/1/02 in Indiana where I reside. I am pretty sure we pay sales tax based upon where we live when pruchasing a car out of state.
Question:
Can I actually legally purchase the car prior to receipt of said vehicle to beat the tax hike? Has someone done this? What is the downside?
p.s. I don't like taxes

Don't know the Illinois tax laws, but if you have an "EXACT" price for your MINI, you can pay up front and save yourself the tax. But…
1. If you have any changes in the contract…
2. If you have any problems with the car that require any additional changes with the contract…
3. If you have "ANYTHING" that the dealer may add on to the contract after 12/1/02, "YOU" may be responsible to pay the entire tax…
Paid mine up front because I"d get a better interest rate on my loan and saved myself 1.1%.
I'm not a lawyer, but this is what I did - ASK your dealer.

>>ATTN: Tire & Wheel moderators, can someone move this thread over to MINI Talk?
I'll agree with that. Good conversation, wrong category.

As a follow up, I can do this according to my dealer. They (Bill Jacobs MINI, Chicago) seem to be very accommodating. They are sending all the parerwork via express so I don't have to make an extra trip. I will let you all know if something goes awry.
p.s. Moderator may want to move this post to another forum.

2nd follow up. FYI.This can only be done if you are not financing the purchase. If you are financing through the dealer, the car must be physically at the dealer first. Must be some legal thing.
