woops. went over 4500..

So I went to 5000 by accident on a downshift a couple times, is that bad?

And is it bad to occasionally bring it up to 4500?

I'm TRYING to be easy on it, but it just happens sometimes when accelerating on the highways

No,I went over 4500 both upshifting and down shifting a few times, worst thing is holding constant rpms, like for an hour or more, don't use the cruise, and you should be fine

If you don't break-in a motor properly, the valves and pistons might not seat properly and allow blowby of oil or combustion. The main thing is to let the car warm up before you take it over 3k rpm. Once sufficiently warm, quick runs into the 4000-5000 range (depending on mileage) are actually beneficial because it puts pressure on these components and forces them to bed in properly. 4500 is a general rpm but don't spend much time around that mark. A new engine must be babied a little and then slowly brought up to redline to finish the break-in. I don't think you hurt anything by revving to 5k.

Not to start a huge debate, but, there are widely varying theories about how to break in an engine.

I bounced the limiter within 60 miles.....

It probably doesn't hurt for breif periods, but a memory chip does record engine RPMs and the mileage at which they occur, so if you were to have engine problems somewhere down the road, MINI could use that information to deny warranty repairs.

I did it a couple of times when adreneline got the best of me. But I agree, a few times likely won't hurt and constant speed for too long is not to be done. I consider cruise control to be a bit contrary to Mini driving anyway.

Yeah that chip remembers everything.I had the check engine light come on last winter after a brutal ride in a snow storm, light came on as I got in my driveway, freaked me out, turned the car off,did the 3 on and off thing, cleared it.Some time later was at the dealer, and asked the tech about it,so he hooked in his computer, and it told him that the intake was restricted, and when it happened. That would of been snow that I had been plowing through for 50 miles that caused the restriction.
A couple seconds of idle melted it,and all was good.
I love this car

I stayed under 4500 pretty religiously the first 500 miles, but stretched it out incrementally from 500 until 1250 to 5-5500 or so. Never exceeded 6K. The gearbox was just too tight the first 500 miles or so for "spirited" shifts, and I missed a few causing the engine to spike.

But now at 1800 miles EFR's running cool, averaging 29mpg, and am diggin that engine's sweet spot between 4500 and 6000K. Woo Hoo!!

Wow, Jim you're getting 29mpg? That's great. I'm at 1188 miles, drove about 130 today trying to get to that 1250 mark (finally had some free time), but still only getting like 22-24mpg. :( Hopefully that'll start to go up.

Nope. That is an untrue rumor. I have had an in-depth disscussion with an un-named service manager. There is no part of the system that records RPM's at any point.

Bisch is right. where the hell are you going to store RPM and mileage data for 2k miles down to the SECOND? it couldn't be true. Mini lovers everywhere, relax about your warranty.

Dont count on it. I have 6000 miles on mine, and if I break 22 mpg...I feel like a king.

Wow. I average 29 mpg too. Once or twice I even got 30-31! I wonder why there is such a variance. I guess driving style?
