Looking to upgrade OEM Head Unit
Hi guys, been lurking since Ive owned my mini (about one year now, still in love with it) and im finally interested in getting a new stereo receiver, mainly so I can connect it to bluetooth for music, and maintain the function of my steering wheel controls.
I have a 2012 Coupe S R56, and from what I was reading from some old posts, replacing this OEM unit is a bad idea because it will mess with diagnostics and upgrades down the road. Is this still true?
Im not so savvy with how it all works, and as I understand it, people just put the OEM head unit in the secret compartment to maintain its functionality? Is there a better way, and has the process gotten simpler over the years?
Apologies in advance if there are newer topics covering this, Im trying to do my research but my search did not come up with a satisfactory answer on whether or not I can safely remove the head unit and just junk it, or if I should leave it in. I keep seeing posts about adapters (like the one for chime) but im not sure if that's all I need to justify removing the head unit altogether.
I love your site and how helpful you guys are, so im hoping I can sort this out and finally get some Bluetooth music and other functionality in my ride. Thanks in advance
