Cooper S smoke from under turbo heatshield

Hi
I could really use some help. I have a 2007 cooper S and I thought the turbo oil feed was leaking. I have just spent the last 2 weekends changing the oil feed, drain and.oil filter cooler gaskets. I have the car back together now and have just started it up. after about 1 minute of idling smoke starts to pour from under the upper turbo heatshield. It continues to smoke for few mins after the engine is turned off. It did this before I changed the parts which is part of the reason I thought the oil feed was fault, but perhaps if anything its a little worse now. I put on a new turbo to exhaust gasket, with new bolts torqued in stages to 40NM. My hope was that its oil that was sprayed around burning off but Im too scared to run it now in case it catches fire or does significant damage to the turbo
Thanks
Wes

Sounds to me like you need to disassemble, inspect, and clean the turbo oil and coolant hoses. Also the manifold and DP. Look close for wet areas. Is there also smoke from the exhaust tail pipe?

While you're in there, check the turbo compressor wheel --- should be zero wobble / play in any direction. Mileage on a typical '07S would indicate a worn out original turbo.

Hi, no sign of any leaks or anything when I had it apart to do the oil feeds and drain other than the oil around the oil feed. Bit of something on.catalyst body but I cleansed that with degreaser. No smoke from exhaust. Car done 50k miles

ok, so took the top turbo HS off today to get a better look. Smoke seems to slowly build its way up from the back of the catalyst area and funnel up the cat heat shield and out the top. Nothing from the turbo to down pipe joint. I went under car whilst it running and no drips of oil or coolant that I can see. I can't see anything dripping onto the exhaust. Turbo oil feed dry. coolant to turbo feed dry. turbo oil drain dry. The bits I can see of the oil filter cooler look dry. im totally at a loss now. Is there anything that could be leaking down the back of the catalyst, or the block behind it. I tempted to just give it a run around the block but I'm scared of killing it

Thanks
Wes

If your cat is clamped, not bolted or welded to the exhaust pipe, it could be just trapped fluids around the clamp burning off.

Hi,
I had the same issue when I changed the turbo & resealed the crankcase.
After all parts on the car, i started it up to see if there was anything wrong and after 2 mins, there were smoke coming through the heatshield.
In fact, some oil dripped along the exhaust braided connection so with the heat, comes the smoke.
What I did is to go to the carwash and put the water directly on this connection and no smoke anymore

Hi, I ran car for a bit once i had double checked all connections, pipes and hoses for obvious leaks. Couple of runs around block and no more smoke ! Thanks to everyone for their suggestions

So what was the final solution to fix the issue?

it was the turbo oil feed. The reason the smoke took time to.clear after i changed the.feed.was due to the.residual oil burning off

I was actually just going to suggest this. When diets replaced my turbo, it smokes like a mother for about 5 minutes while the oil coating it and from the install burned off. Once that was done, all was well
