Finally Picked Up My Clubman

Just picked up my digital blue clubman yesterday. I did the 3M paint protection and tinted the windows. Just have a question for everyone here.

I noticed after when i first drove the car, i can smell this burnt smell and also the rims are really hot. Is that normal? My car only had 16km on it when i picked it up.

Welcome to NAM.

Appears that you have a Gen3. I do not know whether your brake calipers have "glides". One of my Honda s2000's had a glide that was sticking and the pads would not release when you took your foot off the pedal. I had the brake burning smell and the rim was hot. Replaced the pads and rotor as in two days it had worn pretty good.

With the KM, are you in Canada? Winter weather can impact your brake calipers.

But this is a brand new car and the brakes don't seem to be sticking. I had that happened to my old car and have to change the rotors and brakes.

Yes i am in canada.

I've gotten some burning type smells from brand new cars initially. Its usually more when they're under a heavier load when new such as whether you accelerated a bit hard at all or perhaps were in heavy traffic a while or going up any steep grades.

I'd watch it, but honestly it may be normal. I just got my 17 Clubbie about a month ago and while I haven't noticed any burning type smells she can be quite toasty after even a relatively short ride. It seems like she holds quite a bit of heat under the hood.

You shouldn't smell a burnt smell. And the rims shouldn't be "hot" either. Take 'er to the dealership.

If you're concerned then I'd take it to the dealer to be safe.

After driving in any sort of traffic in the summer its normal for the wheel area to be quite warm or even hot to the touch. Brakes generate quite a bit of heat that can take some time to cool afterward. My wheels get quite warm or even hot to the touch as are any other vehicle. You'd note that if you've ever washed your car after just driving it that water hitting the wheels or brake rotors may create steam.

I had the burnt smell for the first week. It went away. I have been told, that in addition to new car burn off, the wax coating put everywhere on the cars for shipment is usually not all washed away during initial dealer prep. Many of us have experienced the ooze of this sticky gunk, especially near the headlights -- I'm sure it gets on the exhaust and other warm engine parts as they spray it everywhere.

Warm brakes are usually normal. My factory rims get quite warm even after a short moderate run -- especially the fronts. I've had no issues with abnormal brake wear, but I have to remember to let them cool a bit prior to washing.

Hey, these are hot little cars, right?? That's why we buy them.

Congratulations on your new Clubman. Hope you love it.

Compare all 4 wheels to see if they are all the same level of "hot". If so it is likely normal. If one is considerably hotter than the others then something is amiss. New cars put off weird smells for a short period of time.

Congrats and enjoy!

As others are mentioning, same thing here -- I had the usual "fresh from the factory" odors boiling off the drivetrain for a week or so after getting mine, so I wouldn't be concerned in that regard.

I would chalk it up to new car smells. I experienced the same thing too. Also, if I run her particularily hard and put her away wet, I get some odors. Enjoy!
