Removing the shift boot

Just got a new leather boot to put on my shift ****, but am wondering if anyone else has already done it. I've got photo instructions how to get the center console off, but I'm wondering if I need to remove the armrest first, or if it can just be left attached.

Also, if you've done it, any tips you have would be appreciated.

Thanks!
