When did factory radios start being able to read MP3 discs?

As the title states. Specifically, what build date (on the radio) should I be looking for if I want to play MP3 discs in my car?

I am thinking you need to go to a Gen2 before you can accomplish with out an Aux input. My 07 Vert is still a Gen1 body and I have an aux input, anything earlier you need to add yourself.

2005 is when they started. You can tell as the radios that do have the knurled volume ****. Instead of the smooth one the earlier ones have

Thanks Way! Mine is a very early '05 and frankly I can't remember what style volume **** it has. Will have to check in the morning...

So my car is a 09/04 build and the radio has the smooth ****. Not a big deal; I just won't waste time burning an MP3 disc.

I haven't played a cd in a while, but I'm almost positive my 03 (Dec 02 build) plays mp3s

Could be wrong.....
