Hi All,

I'm pretty close to the arrival of my new Mini Cooper S. Pure Silver with black top and bonnet stripes The one question I had is, "Is there a break in period for the Cooper?" When test driving the car the dealer said there wasn't and stated that they run the car for some number of hours to do this. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Thanks for your help in advance,
tjschroe

The MINI-suggested break-in policy is not to exceed 4500 RPM or 95 MPH for the first 1200 miles.

Ahh man that means I can't floor it on my way back from the dealership. Thanks for the info. Good thing I would have probably made a stupid mistake.

Remember 1200 miles is not all that much. Just go on a quick 1 day errand to pick up a jug of milk 600 miles away.

That is basically what I am going to do to get my MINI ready for action quickly. One quick weekend road trip and I will have my baby singing.

Seriously...the break in period will be over before you know it......I've had my MINI for about 3 and a half months and my break in period ended several thousand miles ago.

Welcome to MiniCooperOnline!

Don't forget you aren't just breaking the engine in...brake pads..rotors
and tires...all need a little break in.

I always cringe at the words "break-in" as it just does not seem right that one must break anything to get it ready for action.

Maybe the MINI crowd should do our own thing and use words like "training" or "conditioning" instead of the harsh-sounding "Break-in"?

Actually the RPM and MPH limits during break-in do not necessarily limit the fun! I've only got 900 miles on my MCS.... Just got home from a nice drive on some farm road twisties..... You can have great fun taking 35MPH "S" bends at 80-90MPH!!!!

brace, concoct, contrive, endow, fabricate, fortify, provision, prime, settle, steel, strengthen, train, accustom, condition, habituate, initiate, instruct, tame, brainwash, educate, inure, shape up, sharpen, tone up, absolve, acquit, disimprison, dismiss, emancipate, exercise, exonerate, expel, liberate, manumit, oust, pardon, unbind, unchain, unimprison, unshackle...

you decide

How about 'spanking the mini?'

hey, just bought a silver and black mini s, dealer informed me of the 1200 mile brake in time, and not to exceed 95 mph, also pretty sure that the manuel states the same. i'm just concerned about the 10,000 miles before the first oil change.
is any one else concerned about the duration for oil change?

I took it easy thru the breakin period. At 1200 milies, I put the pedal to the metal.

iMy MINI works fine, if that helps.

I'm definitely not waiting 10,000 miles before I do my first oil change! I believe it is a good idea to change your oil after the first 1,000 miles to flush out any metal shavings and particles from the build....then I believe you should do it again at 3,000 miles, and then after that, I'll probably do it about every 3,000 miles.

The guy at my dealer said that its synthetic oil which stays clean and what not longer, but I used Mobil 1 synthetic in my Honda Civic and I went about 8 or 9 months and I don't know how many miles before I changed the oil this last time before I sold it...and that oil was very black and dirty!!!

So, I'll definitely change my oil before the recommended 10,000 mark..just have to cough up the money myself, but its worth it if you ask me.

Judging by the concern in this thread Thieves strike again in L.Mini's Neighborhood!, the "break-in" period may last indefinitely.

We are having fun even with the 4500 RPM limit. However, we can't wait to take it up to 6K!

As for the 10,000 mile oil change: we will change the oil prior to that but the 10K oil change will give us an excuse to see our Saleslady again, Amy! She is awesome!

Take care of your MINI! Obey the break in and I am sure that it will give you a LOT of fun and pleasure over the next umpteen years!! LOL

I plan on changing the oil after the first 3000 miles. MINI bonding. Then the dealer after that. Unless I get bored.

Thanks everyone for the responses. It's funny the guys at work want to try my mini out when I get it. And they keep on insisting that there's no such thing as a break in period. So now all I do is roll my eyes haha thanks again everyone.
