Drivetrain Fuel Pump Upgrade
Fuel Pump Upgrade
Hi guys.
I know the R50 fuel pump is known to break down sooner or later. My car is a 06 r50 Cooper, so it has the newer pump from the factory that should last longer. But I still don't feel totally safe on the pump, so I'm wondering if anyone has experience swapping the in tank pump out with an aftermarket in tank fuel pump for better reliability.
So far I have looked at some Bosch and Walbro pumps but would like to get some input from someone that hopefully has some more experience than me on this.

I've got an 06 R50 with 144K on it...no problems with the fuel pump. Everything will break down eventually. I wouldn't worry with it until it actually gives you some problems.
If you still want to change it check out this video by one of the guys in the forums (mod mini) who changes the filter which is on the other side of the fuel take in one.
.
Another guy posted a video which may help too.

The fuel pump assembly replacement I have done before and also have the special tool for removing the locking ring without a hammer.
What I'm considering doing is swapping out the pump inside the assembly with something like a Walbro GSS342
Hoping someone else has done something similar earlier that could help me chose a pump that will be able to replace the stock one.

I wouldn't be too concerned with the fuel pump failing. I'd say in the last 15yrs I've worked on MINIs I've only done 3 or 4 R50 fuel pumps so I wouldn't consider it prone to failing.
