getrag 285 compatibility R53/R56

I have searched and don't see anything.

I am trying to determine if the R56 Getrag 6 speed is substantially the same as the R53 6 speed. Both seem to be Getrag 285 trannys. The R53 is GS6-85 while the R56 is GS6-53. Different part numbers, but is it a question of the mounting surfaces/housing with substantially the same internals? (Ignore the WHY I want to know for now...).

If any one has insight, or can point me to a discussion (or has a mole deep inside Getrag!, these guys are so tight lipped they should be running our security ), it would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Regards,
Jerry

so.. A transmission.. is a transmission.

now engine 'compatibility' depends on the bell housing, and the drive splines on the clutch.

so.. yes it is compatible.. but I'm not sure if it will bolt up, or if you would have to make a new bell housing..

And at that point, the question is.. why?
