R60/R61 Intercooler

For Countryman owners that upgrade their intercooler, is the aftermarket intercooler for the R60S/R61S the same for the ones that are built for the R56S?

I can confirm that it is. Bought mine from Way and it's listed as a Forgre motorsport R56 stepped intercooler.

I checked Forge Motorsport's website, and they have 2 different listings, one is for R56S and another one for R60S. Does anyone know what makes them different? There seems to be 2 separate pieces for the R60S and only 1 piece for the R56S, and the one for R60S is more expensive... Is the one for R60S better than the one for R56S?

The R56 one will fit 100%. It's a stepped core where as the second one is a single width core. Both will fit but the second one will require some trimming of the bumper to fit...the first one does not. Supposedly the comp IC (second pic) is better but my stepped core usually runs only 1 degree above ambient when the car is moving. That's not bad. The second pic it shows two pieces bc they are comparing stock to the new unit. I can make a video of real time air temps pre and post IC for ya tomorrow.

In your first picture, it looks like it is a compound IC since it has 2 separate parts, right? Way lists your Forge stepped IC for $599.95, which is $120.00 less than what is listed on Forge's website. I wonder why...

I am comparing the two different units against each other in the first pic to show how much more surface area there is in the Forge piece. The stock unit has black plastic end tanks. The competition unit is more expensive bc more surface material to cool the charged air. As to the price difference from WMW vs. Forge...Economics/ retailer vs. manufacturer. Give Danny Way a shout about it. He's a straight up guy and won't BS you. I have no ties to the shop so if you find the same thing cheaper good on ya. I'm in NC and Chris at G3 is my guy as I like to support local business as much as I can.

Also if I may make an additional suggestion...get an oil catch can as well. You may find when you take your IC piping apart installing you new intercooler there will be oil coating all the pipe work and inside the stock intercooler. A catch can will help reduce this blow by from reaching the back side of your valves.

Ah, got it. Thanks for helping me understand these ICs, NCBob! I'm a newb in engine mods. I just got coilovers on the car, and I'm looking forward to having my ECU tuned, but I don't know should I go stage 1 or stage 2. I really want to go straight to stage 2 without purchasing stage 1 first, then upgrading the tune to stage 2 since there are no local tuners in Seattle, which means I'll have to ship my ECU elsewhere. I guess I'll have to decide either to go with Helix stepped IC or Forge stepped IC. I don't think I'll purchase the compound one since I'm not tracking my car... Do you think CAI is necessary?

Is the oil catch can really necessary? I guess it's another $200.00 out of my pocket + installation fee by a mechanic in a local shop...

I went with a manic stage one first. I'm lucky enough to have a local tuner close by. Manic says it's okay to run this tune with stock setup. Honestly, this is how the car should have come. Danny says you should do the intercooler first but, I ran stage one with no problems for two months with the stock IC. It will be a night and day difference! Not just a subtle one either. It's like someone kick your car in the rear...it'll scoot!!! Stage two has a minimum requirement of a full exhaust (downpipe back) and low cell or catless downpipe, and intake (there is no true cold air intake for the R60 now) I went with a aFe panel filter. The catch can isn't a necessary item. It'll help keep your motor and intake track free from oil. Install of both the intercooler and catch can are easy enough for you and a buddy to do in the driveway. The catch can really requires minimal work to put in. Youtube is you friend here. Use the highest non ethanol gas you can get after the tune.

The square R60 Forge intercooler only fits the very early R60 and Euro R60s, so it doesn't fit most US cars. So the R56 one is the one you want as it's a perfect fit. We keep them in stock and ready to ship as it's one of the best bangs for the buck. We do also recommend it before the tune as it will help the tune be even better.

We do all the tuning here so you are welcome to ship your ECU to us. Otherwise I have some great friends in Seattle I'd love to visit so if we had enough tunes I would make the trip.
