Looking for an experienced opinion. Electrical or simply a battery issue?

Looking for an experienced opinion. Electrical or simply a battery issue?

I've worked on my jeeps and trucks for decades, but just started working on my girl's MINI (2010 S) recently. So, any opinions or advice would be much appreciated.

The other day I took care of a P0302 issue for her. Moving around the coils, changing plugs, etc...

After taking care of the issue I had the codes cleared and then the window started acting up. By acting up I mean the window would go down when you opened the door, but wouldn't go back up after it was closed. Annoying but not really a big deal... The next night the car wouldn't start. So I jumped it, took it to test the battery, and have it charged...

Since then the car has just been acting odd... not sure if it's the battery even though it took a full charge, maybe the alt going, resetting the codes...

Has anyone had to deal with this or something similar?

Thanks in advance!

Cold be a battery problem. Have you tested the battery? Being a 2010 the battery is past their rated 5 year lifespan.

You may need to relearn the windows, I've had multiple cars that required the windows reinitialized for random reasons.

I had the battery tested at AutoZone. After the charge it said it was good to go. But, I agree after 6yrs it's probably time... Fortunetly her mom lives 2 miles from a car battery factory and it will only cost $15-25. So, it may be worth while just for the peace of mind.

What do you mean by relearn the windows?

That's what I'm thinking too... which will be a super cheap fix. Just wanted to cover my basis though...

I've always stayed away from German cars, but her warranty just expired... So no choice...

There is a window reinitialization procedure you can do with a dealer level scan tool, and there are times that they need to be reinitialized, or the FRM requires resetting. But FRM coding has become very risky business due to how fragile they are, if you burn out an FRM you need to have a J2534 pass through device to code a new FRM to the car.

Also, if you're replacing the battery you also need to find a dealer level tool that will register the battery to the car.

That's exactly what it was. When I did the coils and unplugged the old battery it needed to be reprogrammed. By not reprogramming it the alternator wasnt synced and wouldn't recharge... which caused the top and windows to act up, as well as killed the battery again. The fellas at the DEKA factory threw in the new battery and did the reprogram for $25 + $1(install). Haven't had a problem since (knock on wood).
