Hi folks. I performed a carbon cleaning on my MCS over the weekend, everything went smoothly but once I reassembled everything and went for a drive I noticed that my turbo was no longer working. My guess was that I either missed tightening up something or forgot to reattach an electrical connection somewhere. I disassembled everything all over again last night and patiently put it back together and still no luck. Confirmed that there are no vacuum leaks. As for the electrical connections I disconnected/reconnected, they include:
- Mass airflow sensor
- Manifold pressure sensor
- Throttle body sensor
- 2 other connections attached to the manifold itself
Aside from the turbo not spooling, the car runs great and there are no error codes.
This is the second time I've cleaned the valves, no issues the first time around.
Have you checked all of your vacuum lines between the wastegate and the vacuum reservoir? There are multiple vacuum lines in the area of the intake manifold that you could've either knocked loose or forgot to reconnect.
That certainly may be my issue. I did see one loose line, about as thick as a straw, but didn't think much of it as I could not locate a connection point. I just took a drive 5 mins ago and the RPMs smoothly dropped until the car stalled out so I'm pretty convinced that there's a leak somewhere. Do you possibly have rear-side motor vacuum line diagram?
there are two straw like lines that one connects to the turbo on the bottom right side and the other connects to the vacuum pump. the shorted is the one goes to the pump. Also, check of the turbo actually spins.start the car while the intake pipe is not connected and see if it spins.
MiniToBe, thanks for the response. The straw-like lines you mentioned are connected, I am very familiar with those. Unfortunately the one I was referring to is located under the intake manifold and is hanging down the rear of the motor.
I'll attempt your recommendation to see whether the turbo spins. I honestly doubt it does. Its normally quite loud, especially with my intake plus per the Torque Pro app, for vacuum/boost, it never shows any boost.
aha, yes these also should be connected in the back dah...but there is the vacuum tank and the blow of valve,i think. they tend to slip since these lines swell from oil or simply from being disconnected. do not be surprised if the turbo spools. but check it
That's just odd. I'd take the intake back apart since it's easy, and make sure everything is as it should be. You don't hear any spooling at all? Take the fresh air snorkel off your air box, if you're don't hear a hiss she could be done. How many miles and was there an issue prior to cleaning your valves?
Car has 81k miles.....Motor has 52k miles. I don't hear any spooling. No air box, have an Alta intake.
I clean my valves with TB Cleaner and Seafoam along with a wire brush, wire pipe cleaners, etc... I take my time and repeat the process MANY times. Results are not 100% but they certainly are at least 90-95% cleaner.
Since you're using a wire brush an the like it is possible that some debris may have fallen/broken off and went into your combustion chamber then out to the turbo and messed up/jammed up your impeller. Take that turbo off and give er a look see. Also, I'd recommend heading to harbor freight and getting a media blaster and one of these:http://bavauto.com/shop.asp

I was careful and made sure all valves were completely closed plus I used a shop vac followed by compressed air as an additional precaution.
I really need to get my hands on a vacuum line diagram. In the meantime I am heading over to my mechanic in a few hours. He recently swapped out my original motor and has it sitting on a skid with the original intake manifold attached.
i woulda love to grab that engine...but i'm in philly...the easy way is to move the impeller by hand and see if it jammed. you might have some of that carbon going into the turbo and you know how sticky these plunks are.

In short, there are a few lines to check. From vacuum pump back to the vacuum tank (under intake), a second line from the tank going to the control valve (under the intake, attached by rubber hanger) and the last line going from the control valve up to the turbo wastegate actuator.
bif Iz - you are absolutely right, I came to the same conclusion after doing a bunch of research then yesterday my car finally presented code P0441, which confirms the theory. I'll take a look tonight or tomorrow, depending on what time I get off work, and report back to everyone.
On another note. After the carbon cleaning, I also cleaned out the the TB, intake manifold and all other tubes and hoses, as they were all quite oily, and got rid of the dreaded P2188 code which has been plaguing my car for the past several months.

It is odd you are getting no codes as i have always seen bad vacuum lines or incorrect installation cause a fault. Make sure you didn't cross the purge valve and pressure converter connectors. I think they can be mixed up.

Definitely didn't cross them. Only one of the lines kept coming loose on both ends. Took care of that but still no dice. Going to try swapping the purge valve tomorrow as I have an extra. Code is P0441. So frustrating
you have code P0441 now? Thats most likely a purge valve but I dont know if that would cause your turbo to not spool. Unless the connectors are crossed lol. Does the car feel very slow. Like even slower then a regular cooper? Does the motor hesitate or malfunction in anyway when going full throttle? Check the diverter valve for full movement. Normally all those things would cause a code.
