Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 - Tire Rack

Tire Rack has these on sale.....I'm planning on doing some autocrosses and track days - it's been many years since I last did any - and I've just finished some work on my '09 Clubman S.....spent more than planned.....

I know that these aren't the grippiest, but they wouldn't be a disaster, right?

Disaster you say?
"something that happens suddenly and causes much suffering or loss to many people?"
probably not

"a complete or terrible failure?"
surely not

"something that has a very bad effect or result?"
possibly not as you could always blame the tire for your rustiness to save face

You aren't going to know how much of the gap between you and what you'd like to do is attributable to you, the car, the tire, or the competition. The one thing that is for sure is that you will save a few hundred dollars. If that isn't likely to keep you from having fun, I say go for it.

The newer Firehawk (non-Wide Oval) Indy 500 looks a lot more promising
and is still pretty cheap at $84/tire (205/50/16)
or are you looking at 205/40/17 or 215/45/17?

OK for those on a budget, OK for street use, works in dry but not in wet conditions. Liveable. 320 Treadwear

You won't be able to keep up with other autocrossers on Max and Extreme Summer tires.

Comes in-
205/50-16 $62.25
215/45-17 $58.25

On a budget there are other options depending on what wheel size you have-

Sumitomo HTR Z III Max Summer tire
see
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=149
215/45-17 $70.48 each, 300 treadwear
Good street tire, gives good handling and performance in dry, still OK in wet, doesn't come in 16" sizes

For the price. It's really not bad. Should be getting a set next week to be fitted, surely they can't be worse than stock 16 run flats. At least I hope not.

Agreed. This tire has been out in the Japanese Market for a while. It had also tested incredibly well on our wet and dry track test. The test should be published shortly.

Ordered Friday night/Saturday morning. Tire rack over nighted yesterday and here by 10 this morning! I was first hesitant cause the price was too good. After some research, tires have a lot of potential. Definitely worth the money, and the rating is not bad at all. Thanks tire rack!!!!

I didn't make it to the track day with these.....will have to wait till next season. Have used them a little commuting, but nothing to report other than they are well-behaved using them that way (for example, they are not noisey, and they're decent in the rain).
