MPG for the first 400 miles...eek

So...in the first 400 miles my car is telling me I'm averaging 17mpg. Now, I have been having fun with it to be sure...but . Doesn't change much, I know once the new-ness wears off my driving habits will mellow out a bit. This thing is so much fun to drive around the city!

I have about 13000 on mine and still having fun but don't think I've ever posted below 24 mpg. If I'm local driving it is usually more like 27 mpg. If I'm highway driving (80 mph) I rack up more like 32 mpg.

I don't think you can judge mpg based on any one tank of gas.
Even the dashboard averages over the last 2 or 3 tanks, or 1,000 miles or so, so don't reset it at every fill-up.
You should see around 26-27 for a Cooper S, 30+ for a Cooper.
Here's my last few tanks for an overall 27mpg over the last 3 years & 25,000 miles:
26.93
26.75
26.28
25.94
25.45
25.99
26.57
26.77
27.01
27.53
27.48
27.38

Don't Sweat mine is/was around the same in the first little bit. The only real way to check your MPG is to see the mileage at you fill ups.
Also check your average speed. Mine is under 36kph (21 mph). When you travel short distances that's the hit. When calcutated at the pump my car runs around 26mpg (imperial). Not great. On a trip it is closer to 40mpg.

For the most part, my commute is 4mi each way so I must admit I do my best to make it a fun drive for that short distance. On fill ups I'm letting it get to two bars and when my range info tells me I've got about 50-60 miles to go, I tend to just top it off. At that point, my trip meter says I've gone anywhere from 130-150 miles.

In any case, it's not a concern of mine, just getting feedback on JCW newbies and their experience.

I don't trust the computer approximations as it's never that accurate. Clock your miles from fill up until you're on the last bar (which you still have a gallon or two left too). Typically, I get 275-300 per tank in Mid Mode. In Sport, it's closer to 225-250.

This confuses me. I've never had a car give different mileage between normal and sport mode given the same driving conditions, my MINIs included. Do these cars run less efficiently in sport mode, or is the difference behavioral? Are the cars where this happens autos (ie. sport raises your cruising RPMs)?

The only difference is the electric throttle response. It feels like you accelerate faster that's because is like having a shorter pedal.

Just like you get slightly better MPG in Green mode because of the lower RPM's and reduced throttle response, you're going to get slightly lower MPG in Sport mode.

In theory at a constant speed your mpg should be the same regardless of mode.....give the a.c. etc is set the same.

Oook. That mirrors my experience. I know the autos cruise at higher RPMs and shift later, but I've not observed any difference in fuel economy in a manual car in sport vs normal.

Round trip from Indy to MI and back I achieved 40.9 mpg. 2015 JCW auto with 12k miles, mid mode, two passengers, luggage and a golden retriever. Sometimes the a/c was on. Biggest factor IMO is speed. Obeyed the posted limits. I wish I remembered the avg speed for this tank of gas. That trip had a lot of 60 MPH highway limits.

My usual mpg per tank is in the low 30's where trip distances are around 10 miles. I'm getting 330 miles or so per fill up.

Since your car is new, may I suggest checking the tire pressure. Recommended pressures are something like 42 front and 39 rear. When I picked up mine all four had 35 psi.

Here is a good site to see what fuel mileage others are getting: www.fuelly.com. If you register your car, and then regularly input your "fill-ups" it will track it for you. You can also track city vs. highway mileage.

I just live with the fact I won't be getting 28 combined... ever. Rather have fun then not.

New automatics are getting better mileage than the manual transmissions...

MCS Hardtop 2016 Manual gets 27 mpg while automatic gets 29 mpg

Just can't figure out how at a constant speed an automatic gets better gas mileage than the standard. I know it does and I can certainly understand it on twisty roads and round town....but at constant speed...

That can be the only real answer. Buy there must be a speed where the manual has better millage.
Or is it like a VW thing...

Just finished a 450mile round trip from Austin to Dallas. A tank and a half of gas used and the car says 30.6 mpg for the trip. This was in a mix of Mid/Sport mode, Mid on the highway and Sport in traffic / city streets....and I was cruising at mostly 80-90mph each way, finishing the last 30 miles at 100mph on our outer-city-limits toll road. Props to my valentine 1 for keeping me moving. I might get flamed for speeding, but this trip just ticked over the 1k mile mark on the car and I'm still having fun. Just like TheGeekGuy said, I'd rather have fun than not.

I was curious about mileage for other drivers, it's kind of fascinating how much the mileage varies for everyone.
I just hit 300 miles on my 2017 JCW hardtop, average was around 29 at my first fill-up.

What I also noticed is if I left my car on but not driving, you can watch the mpg plummet the longer you sit.

I use lots of cruise control, auto stop/start, and varied green, mid, sport mode.
It's hard not to romp on this thing!! It's so fun! But I've been careful not to go crazy during the break in period.

My JCW Coupe (1.8L engine, R58 not the G3 car): 26 mpg in town, Sport mode. 3,000 mile trip through Colorado and Wyoming: 34.4 mpg highway. Big difference.

The Gen 2 is only 1.6L engine. It is amazing the JCW pumps out 208 HP from a so small package.

The Gen 3, 2.0L engine is certainly a must to keep going with the bigger and heavier body shell.

Your poor mileage probably has more to do with you braking rather than your acceleration. Every time you apply the brakes you are throwing away the energy that was spent to get your vehicle up to that speed; the brakes absorb the speed energy by converting it into heat. So if you are driving hard, while also doing a lot of continuous hard braking, you shouldn't, and can't, expect very good fuel mileage.

If you think about it, it is like taking gas out of the fuel tank and throwing it away. As you can imagine, even the highest MPG rated vehicles will get poor mileage if most of the fuel energy is not used for forward movement, but rather thrown away.

I know that JCW Mini's are fun to drive, so I am by no means telling you how to drive, I'm just explaining why you are probably experiencing your poor mileage.

Hmmm? I wonder if that is why our MINI gets much better fuel mileage when my wife drives it?
