JCW Exhaust Backfire........

I asked the question a few times before but I never saw a reply that would answer my concern and fix the problem that is now going worse over time.

The Sport mode is the only way to add some punch. Combined with the JB+, this provides a good option to improve the overall performance of the engine.

My problem is the backfire that occurs on sport mode is becoming so loud that some times it is more of a gun shot. I don't have an issue with a few burbles and pops as when the car was new if it is the nature of the beast but now it is getting worse at 13K.

My question for the tuning experts is as follow:

-Does the setting of the JB+ has something to do with this? I am set at 3.5 and never touch it again. Climatic conditions are low 50s and coastal.

Take it off and see if the backfire stays, its plug and play , so an easy test. If it does only with the piggyback , I would call them or talk to them about it.

Former Countryman owner here: FWIW, I had the JCW exhaust with a JB+ and had very loud pops with and without the JB in sport mode (and sometimes even in normal mode, though not as loud). They did seem to be more frequent with the JB on though. My neighbors didn't care for it, but I thought it was brilliant

This is not the issue because the overall performance of the engine is even better. I am now able to get a mostly steady 31-32 MPG between fill ups from the onboard computer readings at every reset. I have no clue if it is accurate.

I would like to find something to read about how this "digital pop feature" has been set in the Mini software and how it can be converted only to the burbles to be more convenient for some owners.

In others words, I love burbles and rumbles from all my previous sport cars but I never disturbed my neighbors with a sound like gun shot as my Mini.

Piggy back then is more of an amplifier for that ecu program. They had it in the gen 1 , then they took it away in gen 2 early years, because people that were new to the brand thought it was a engine problem, backfire noise = problem. Then they brought it back .

It is supposed to be only for the N18 engine so it should be compatible.

As you know, they have no customer service line you can talk to somebody.

From my own experience of the last 3 months, I believe the chip is sensitive to variable climatic conditions depending where you live in the country and may need some tuning. Technical support would be great to answer questions.

Since temperature is going up in the upper 40s, the big pops seem to have disappeared.

The product is outstanding.

They should improve the customer service to the end users with a phone line to answer questions. This is just my opinion.

I have a 2013 JCW roadster with a jb+ and don't get many burbles or pops at all in sport mode. Did you try removing the jb+ to see if the backfires go away in sport mode? I read your response above and could not tell. The first thing I did when I bought my car was change out the plugs, maybe that might help. I was not aware that sport mode actually increased performance, I thought it just changed the steering and throttle opening response.
I emailed them about settings for the jb+ and terry got back to me in a day. The only thing you can do with a jb+ is change the setting on the dial according to the message I got from terry. I have mine set at the 11 o'clock position for a stock jcw.
His company just got fined heavily by the CARB so I doubt he wants to change anything at all on the current approved jb+ programming or encourage anyone to mess with it. I would also love to talk to a person for tech support but he at least did answer his emails.

This is the setting I have and never changed. The temperature is now getting warmer and Thanks God, the loud pops are now gone.

If they have been fined, it is probably the reason they don't have a live CS line.

Curiosity made me search. 91,600.00 plus legal fees I assume. And buyback of products as needed.

From their website, the JB+ is CARB certified for only the Mini N18 engine application with 20/30 added performance.

For real BMW engines we don't have in our Mini, it is considered as competition and track only as advertised on their website.

I was surprised to see this settlement. When I purchased my JB+ it was with full knowledge that it was not CARB compliant and only for track use (in CA).

I do not recall ever seeing that the JB+ was street legal in CA until after the mid-2015 update.

It does explain why BMS offered to replace my current JB+ with the newer CARB compliant model.
