New member- stupid question

Recently purchased a 2010 S. Service date shows September of this year but all other items (oil, brakes, etc) have thousands of miles left per condition based service calculation. What has to be serviced now as the service date has come on?

Lots of guys change oil/filter and rotate tires at 5K intervals and check the oil weekly. A few don't...
The serpentine belt should be replaced at 30 to 40K intervals. I know you've seen them lying on the pavement. You don't want one to be yours.
You can jack up a corner, pull the wheel and measure the brake pads yourself. Need to do that front and back as they wear differently. You can go another 50 or more K on the plugs.

Don't be scared to ask questions. Some info in this NAM thread HERE. When you service it just be sure to check over things, your fluids, belts, etc. If you need anything be sure to let me know.

If you have a service history that will help guide what you need to do. Mini's CBS is overly optimistic, probably because the "free" [cough], maintenance plan doesn't want to pay for more frequent fluid changes.

If it hasn't been done in 36K, I'd immediately do coolant flush and brake fluid flush. If you are not handy and into checking the brakes, are they the original, if so might be time to replace. Probably replace air filter and cabin filter, windshield wipers. Belts as previously mentioned.

Oil change is based on mileage or annually whichever occurs first.

FYI: A stupid question is something like; "What time is the midnight buffet?"....unless you're in a different time zone????

Sounds like what I am hearing bottom line is.. don't rely on the CBS numbers too much and check everything yourself.

Which is a good segue way (hope i spelled that right) to what I am seeing with the brakes. Yesterday coming to a stop, I heard a noise from the rear passenger side brake. Looks like I need new pads but the wear sensor does not indicate that. Maybe the sensor is not working...

Is the sensor properly installed in the brake pad?

There are two ways the brake light will come on in that situation, either mileage or the sensor is actually tripped.

Planning on changing front/rear pads/sensors and checking rotors. Then do I have to reset the date myself or does the sensor sense and calculate a new mileage?

You will have to reset the countdown yourself via the turn signal stalk.

How to reset interval counters

Going through the CBS you'll want to select the options for the front/rear brakes. Once you are at the desired item, press and hold the BC button until the word RESET appears. Press the BC button again and hold it until the mileage and distance displayed turns to dashes. Press the BC button on the turn signal stalk to confirm the reset. Front is this (picture below) and rear is the same, but just showing rear of the vehicle. We go over this in our DIY. We also have on that can help you when checking brake rotor thickness. If the rotors do not meet minimum thickness specifications, replace them. We have some great brake kits here if you need them, which include the front and rear brake wear sensors. If the pads are well worn there is a very good chance you are going to break it trying to remove it.
