Yokohama VS. Michelin Tires?
Yokohama VS. Michelin Tires?
Looking for feedback. Yokohama Avid Ascend (P175/65R15) vs. Michelin All Season-Energy Saver (175/65R15 84H)? I am looking for good gas mileage and tread life. Any feedback would be great.
Tire Rack - How to Read Speed Rating, Load Index & Service Descriptions
OEM 175/65-15 tires are H-rated.
OEM 175/65-15 tires are H-rated.
Functionally it means that it has a MUCH softer sidewall....aimed at MINI-Vans, etc...
Sure, you may NEVER drive fast enough to need a Speed rated tire, but the speed rating tells you about HOW the tire is constructed...
If you want a "wallowy" MINI, the low speed rating tire will give you a smooth ride, but might scare you by the amount the car DIPS in hard turns....like on/off ramps, etc...
Many/MOST shops will not install a tire that DOES NOT MEET THE OEM SPEED RATING....sure it is about liability, but also about changing their cars handling in ways folks don't understand till they wreck their car...getting off a highway too fast...

You are not limited to OEM tire sizes
With OEM 15" wheels you can also consider-
185/65-15
195/60-15
This gives you more tire selection.
Good gas mileage tires are eco tires and longer treadlife tires will tend to be All Season. Smoother ride quality is a feature of Grand Touring tires, you don't want standard or Passenger tires.
In Grand Touring All Season tires
On a budget and in 175/65-15 there is
General AltiMax RT43 $67.82 each, 600 treadwear H speed rated
In the same tire class but 195/60-15 gives you:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...earDiameter=17
Lots of choices from $100-$119 each.
The 195/60-15 tire is wider so it will have a little more rolling resistance than a narrow 175mm wide tire. The 195mm wide tire has slightly better cornering and stopping.

This was very very helpful. Thanks
So tell me; what do the 1st 3 numbers stand for? (i.e. 185 - 195)
You want the H speed rated tire at a minimum for a base Cooper.

175 is the width of the section of the wire at the widest point in millimeters
65 is the profile in percent which gives you the sidewall height in percentage of section width
15 is the diameter of the wheel the tire fits on
If you go TireRack and click on a tire then "specs" you can see all of the relevant information for that tire model's various sizes.

If I go from a 175 up to a 185 or a 195 tire (taller side wall), wont that mess with my speedometer? I would be going faster than the speedometer shows, correct? Thank you kindly.

Again, the tire sidewall is percentage of the section width. 175*.65, 185*.65,195*.60
175/65-15 is 24.0" diameter
185/65-15 is 24.5"
195/60-15 is 24.2"
Factory installed OEM tires range from 24.0 to 24.6"
Your speedometer is set fast at the factory. It reads faster than you are actually travelling. A taller diameter tire will slow it down; actually making it more accurate.
