I just picked up a 2009 mini cooper base model. It has the stereo in the speedo and the display does not work on it. Are there any options outside of replacing it with a stock stereo? I am looing for an inexpensive but functional fix.

 

OK next question after the overwhelming response. I have been doing a bunch of research and have not found a definitive answer on if you remove the stock system out of the speedo does it in fact mess up the diagnostics? I know you will get a stereo error with it gone but there are some that say that the BMW techs will not be able to run any diagnostics. I have seen where some have lengthened the ribbon cable and hid the stock unit behind the speedo and some who have just taken the stock unit out completely.

 

When you say the display doesn't work, does the radio work? Big difference. I found this thread -
