I am anticipating a lot of issues so I figured I would start a thread for my car. My mom had a 04 r53 with more issues than she cared to deal with. I shipped it out to where I live for me to hopefully fix inexpensively and then enjoy as a second city car.
The car has water issues coming from the sunroof drains (and maybe elsewhere) and a bunch of electrical problems as a result.
Step 1 was to fix water leaks. The sunroof drains are both clean, I am going to test out the other problem areas with a hose later today.
For electrical issues, the tach cluster above the steering wheel had intermittent function. My hope was that if the car was dried out, I could just clean up some electrical connectors and be on my way. I started looking for corrosion and unfortunately I found a broken pin on a connector below the drivers side fuse box:
I can't get the mini cooper WDS on bmw-planet to work. I did add a security exception in java but that didn't fix the issue. Can anyone identify this connector? Do any of the retailers here sell pins and crimping tools for this style of connector?
Research says this is the x15 connector. I still haven't been able to get the WDS to load. Honestly, I might just splice in weather pack connectors for the failed connections. Redoing 39 pins sounds really tedious plus I can't find a source for this connector yet.
If someone here can get the WDS to load- Can you screenshot as much useful information about this as possible? Ideally what each pin is wired to and the corresponding wiring colors on both sides of the connector.
I finally got the WDS to load (only works in IE on my laptop). Now when I start the car I see this:
The failed pin was #15 and its been replaced with a butt splice. I will switch this over to a weather pack connector soon but this was the fastest way to see if I had the right wire:
Took it for a drive, tach stopped working halfway through. Does anyone know a source or part number for this 42 pin tyco connector? Googling has found some pictures of similar connectors but no part numbers.
The corrosion and stuck pin prevented the housing from coming off as it should so I trimmed the housing off of the female side of the connector to get a better look at the corrosion. It is pretty nasty inside so I am resigned to repining at least the female side and then seeing what happens.
If you can't find a new connector, there's always the option of finding a wrecked Mini and steal those connectors. However, I know that depending where you live, sometimes it's easier to get struck by lighting than finding a Mini in a junkyard.
