R50/53 Lane County Oregon: need road recommendation
Lane County Oregon: need road recommendation
I'll be driving north through Oregon to Canada next month and plan on staying a couple of days along the coast at Florence. Would someone recommend driving along Siuslaw Road, parallel to the river, from Cottage Grove to Florence?
It looks very twisty, but slow driving. I'm in no hurry... more interested in the scenery and safe road condition. The alternative would be to head west along Hwy 126 from Eugene.

Great!
You and the Mini will really like that drive, I went to college in Eugene(UofO) and just recently graduated.
126 From Eugene to Florence will take you around 45-60 minutes depending on traffic conditions. It is pretty twisty, but relatively high speeds.
I have never driven on Siuslaw road all the way to Florence, it does look like a nice drive, but my guess is that it would take quite awhile. My vote is for 126. You can always come back on the other road if 126 didn't fit the bill.
If you do take 126: After reaching the town of Mapleton you will be alongside a large river. Keep your speed down!!!. Mapleton seems to have invested quite heavily in a decent sized force of Camero Staties with the new low profile light bar. They are sneaky and will grab you for even 5 over. Mapleton is the town right before Florence, I have never seen a speed trap before Mapleton so do all the "spirited" driving between Eugene and Mapleton.
Good restraunts in florence:
Mo's If you are in the mood for seafood. This is the place for seafood.
Morgans (take 126 till 101, then head 101 south for about 10 miles). Morgans will be on the right about 3 miles after crossing the bridge. Great all around food, including seafood and burgers.
The best beaches in the area are out on the North Jeddy. Take 126 until it intersects 101. Go straight through the light there and follow that road and signs to Ocean Beaches. If you get lost stop at the 7-11 there on the corner for directions.
Unfortunately Florence isn't the *greatest* of seaside towns, but it can be quite fun. Check out Old Downtown while you are there if you are in the trinket grabbing mode(I never was).
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!!!
