Just wondering if it can be done and how much it cost. I'd especially like the instantaneous (sp?) MPG readout.

I guess it can't be done, at least not without great difficulty.

Thank you me.....you're welcome.

Search around here, maybe also at motoringfile, I know I read about someone doing this. You can either buy the correct stalk with the button on it or I think I read that someone installed their own button, then had the dealer program it in.

RESMINI:

I'm not sure what you're asking -- could you clarify? It's my understanding that the MPH and MPG readouts are part of the OBC -- both work on mine, along with the temp and some other option (that I apparently don't use much!). The averaging time for the MPH and MPG can be reset easily by holding down the button until the display changes to flashing lines.

So -- can you decode "RESMINI" for me? Just curious....

Thanks for the reply.

The OBC on 04 and later models includes a readout of instantaneous gas mileage and a readout for miles per hour. My 03 OBC doesn't have MPH, (it does have average speed though), and only has average miles per gallon. My question is: Is it just a programming change to make these two fuctions available, or is it more than that?

I called ASKMINI and was told that it can't be done, at least not with programming alone. They said check with my dealer. I'm sure there is some way to do this, but it's probably prohibitively expensive.

RESMINI........My initials, RES plus MINI. I got my first vanity license with RESMINI on it. It's white with red letters which looks great with my CR/W MC. Everyone calls me by my initials, R.E..............so my wife made a small red apostropy out of red tape. The license now says RE'SMINI and looks like it was made that way.

The OBC on my 02 MCS has outside air temp, distance until empty, MPG and average speed. Though it does not give you continuous instantaneous speed you can hit the reset button and after it goes blank the first speed that comes back on the display will be you true speed at that point.

I use that trick a lot because I drive through speed traps in the morning when no one is on the road but me and the cops because my analog speedo is 4 to 6 MPH off.

Right, I can get instantaneous speed and miles per gallon by pushing the button. The 04's and later give you a continuous reading of those two readings. That's what I want.

Oops, I misunderstood you. I haven;t read of anyine doing that. I thought you did not have the OBC at all.

Hi all!

I'm a (recent) europe 02 MCS happy owner

Sorry for such an archeological feat, bringing up an issue from 2004, but in fact, after many searches I couldn't find a definite answer for the original question in this post:

Can a older OBC, with temp, range, avg speed and avg mpg be somehow modified in order to display instant mpg and, eventually, instant speed?

If so, is it possible with just a bit of "programing" by a dealer or is it something more expensive to do?

From a theoretical point of view, it should be easy since anyone can access both readings (instant mpg and speed) from the hidden menus, but we all know that theory is seldom aligned with practice

What do you know about this? Or .. simply what do you think? After so many years someone must know the answer for sure

Cheers

OBC question

It is programded to do it right now. I have an 02 and use the OBC that way all the time.

As you toggle through the 4 part menu stop at the speed option let it sit a second or two and then press the button real fast only once. The same with MPG. I've used it for years.

Well ... tried to do it as you described, but without success And believe me I tried waiting 1 second, 2 seconds, 1,5 seconds, etc.

Maybe you just reset the average MPG and average speed, which allows you to watch instantaneous mpg or speed for a couple of seconds. Could it be what you meant?

I too am a little confused about the OBC.

My sister '03 R50 has avg. mpg, avg. speed, distance until empty, and outside temp.

My g/f's '04 R50 has the same as above, plus instantaneous mpg, and instantaneous speed.

My '06 R53 has everything the above two have, EXCEPT for instantaneous speed, which is something I would really like.

All cars came with the OBC from the factory. Anyone care to shed some light on why there are such discrepancies? Is it possible to add in functions?

I too want to know if it's possible to retrofit into an 02. Seems like it should be.

FlzRider, does your 06 may have the speedo next to the tach? I think Chrono packs put the speedo next to the tach and thus, wouldn't need current speed info in the OBC. Just a guess.

I would love this. The center speedo is definitely off on mine.

Guess I might just have to get a scangauge 2. It'd be nice to have a makeshift boost gauge with that too. Will take some getting used to though.

Yea, I do have the chrono pack. I'm just so used to a digital speed readout from my bike that I still prefer it.

Still interested in the possibility of adding functions.

Is it possible to get some documentation about MINI's instrument's programing/ interfaces with ECU, etc.?

And do you think that we could do something with this information?

I know that BMW/MINI Software is not "open source", but it is not that "closed" also

It'd be awesome if somebody could do it but don't get your hopes up.

Scangauge 2 does the same thing + is a makeshift boost gauge.
