huge advice

alright guys i have a huge problem, i need all the advice out there i can get. i'm 18. i have a new mini on order. i'm doing the mini select so when after 4 years i'll have like 12 grand to pay off, or sell my car. i don't wanna work a whole lot, i'm a waiter at chili's, and i don't wanna get lost with my schoolwork, but i've loved this car. i have a 2000 celica gt that i need to trade, and they're giving me 6500 for it (80k miles so i got shafted cause no private people are buying), i can either continue with this, or try to haggle with them to get my 1000 dollars back and just look around for a lower mileage cool car, that's half the price of the mini. i have a mcs that runs about 23k . the regular mini is too wimpy for me, and in the next town over, i have a guy who imports japanese mitsubishi evolutions, and he's selling a couple for around 10k .... those are powerful, handle great, a little older, but still less mileage than my car now. i need advice what do i do?!

There should be no haggling, you deposite should be fully refundable up untill the point they order the car.

It sounds like right now is not the time to go more in debt. Drive your Toyota until you finish school and can land a decent job. Save your money for a house.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I've been where you are now.

Try and back out and get an Evo, you'll never afford the MINI+Insurance...

Worse case, your out the deposit, but in the long run you'll still be able to afford the Evo, or live in the MINI and eat ramen noodles and leftovers from Chili's!

My car was "on order" for 11 months, it took around 8 months to get a production number. There is "on order" and "on order"

What's wrong with your old car? What is insurance going to run you for that 300 hp car?

When I was 18, my first new car was a 1979 Ford Fairmont. It cost about $3600. My car payment and insurance was $89 a month. It was a decent car that lasted a long time, until I got rear-ended by a drunk in a pickup truck.

After that, I drove a series of used cars until 2000, when I bought a Chevy Metro that was a new car.

Save your money, go to school, get a good job, and when you are 43, you can buy the car of your dreams!

i have the production number, and the 300 hp car is a mitsubishi evo 2 from japan...it's got a us vin though, so it's titled as a mirage....a 1994 mitsubishi mirage has like the lowest insurance ratings, that won't be a problem....

Don't buy something if you know you can't afford it.

that sounds pretty shady. if its titled as a mirage that sounds like they converted the mirage to look like an old school evo (seen this.) also is this evo going to be right hand drive? seems like if he need to import it it would be right hand drive and those rhd cars are tough to get drivable here in the states. a few people i talked to that have rhd hondas say that its the biggest pain to get it legal to drive here. is this evo modified? i didnt think that they generation 2 evo's had 300hp. the new one has that much...

I agree with duv, I wouldn't get involved in these shady import from Japan, US VIN # deals. I knew a guy that was getting cars from Germany through Morotania who is wanted by the FBI for all kinds of fraud charges.

What if you needed to use your insurance and it was obvious to the adjuster that it wasn't a Mirage? They may find a reason not to pay your claim.

If you must spend money, trick out your celica - it'll be a lot cheaper than trading and buying anything else.

Some of the best advice I've heard is wait 3 months. Then if you still want whatever, buy it.

You'd be suprised how much your tastes change in 3 months

Good luck.

When I was in college I drove a Chevette with a big dent in the side that cost $500. Black & Gold just like my MC "Pete" will be. My first really cool car was a 1996 Celica. If there is one car I wish I still had, that would be it.

There is way to much fun (and work) to have in college to worry about making a car payment each month. Someday you would regret not enjoying those 4 years!

Sounds like very good advice about the grey market "Evo." At this point in your life, you really don't need to be investing hard-earned/saved cash in a highly questionable car. Did you say it was to be titled as a "1994 Mirage"? A 10-year-old grey market car...yeah, that's a good place to put 10 grand...

Good luck!

the evo is right hand drive, it's in the next town over and i saw it for myself....i guess i'd hafta add emissions crap for about a grand, i called the dmv....etc., but that's still significantly less than the mini...ah! if only a tree with money grew outside my door...then i could have my mini with no payments and be happy and the statement about chili's shouldn't scare you....it's a steady job that i have, but in reality, i don't want to work too much because i don't want to get lost in my grades, not because i'm lazy...i work every single day during the summer and i don't mind at all

A RHD car, in the US as daily driver? I give you 6 months with that car, by then you'll be looking to dump it out of sheer frustration...

The American Dream: It's not a house, it's a car!

I say climb every mountain, ford every sea, follow your dreams, whatever they may be.

Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead... if it feels good, just do it.

And finally, remember that great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

Dogspeed.

nbame786, keep the Celica and save your headache about working yourself just to make a payment. My first college car was a 1972 Celica I bought in 1978 and I drove that thing for almost 7 years before I could afford a new car. Trust me your grades are far more important than getting caught up in a car. I love cars, but when I was in school I couldn't afford a new one, so I just modified the crap out of my Celica. Also, think real hard before you go and deceive your insurance agent on that Evo because like one of the guys said earlier if you have a wreck they may not cover your claim.
Good Luck:smile:

alright guys made a decision. buying the jdm car would be fraud, and i think i'd only be cheating myself if i let the mini go this time. i'm gonna go for it, i will only keep minimal work hours to pay for the car, so i don't kill myself, and i think it will pay off in the end. if you want something bad enough you have to work for it. i've done it so far and i can do it again. thanks for all of your advice, and motor on!

In the land of the run-on sentence.........

I say get the Mini, drive it to California and sell it for 3 grand more than you paid for it. Use the money for English tutoring, and invest in a shift key for your computer.

Production number or not, my sales person told me that I could have my refund back right up until delivery. Of course this policy may depend on the dealier, but they can easily sell the car to someone else.

Don't buy what you can't afford. Save your money, put up a large down payment, finance for a minimum number of years, pay cash if you can. Don't dedicate your life to making bankers richer.

As for the evo, I see a huge potential for complications.

Good luck in school (make yourself richer!).
