ROUGH IDLE from cold. 2007 R56 MCS
Hi.
R56 Mini Cooper S. Quite a few mods but ran fine with them all for a while till recently.
Currently when you start the car in the morning it sounds rough and isn't on 4 cylinders and then quite often stalls a couple of seconds after startup. Start it again and it tries to idle and the rpm is very low probably 650rpm and its stuttering and fluctuating, not on four cylinders, the idle speed control valve kicks in and the revs flare up and then fall back down again to a low level and it sounds uneven again.
This continues for a while and if you give it a touch of revs it runs smooth. The car looks like its running too rich as when you give it a clear out rev, you get black ish smoke out of the back occasionally.
If you have been on a decent long run, say 10 miles plus the car then idles reasonably well.
The car had the walnut inlet clean about 8k miles ago.
The car has new sparkplugs and coil packs and air filter and so on.
The car has had a new cam chain tensioner and cam chain etc about 15k miles ago.
I'm wondering if it is the High Pressure Fuel Pump or if it is the coolant temp sensor.
Always open to any suggestions before I tear into the issue myself :-).
Thanks,
Steven_RW

Check Engine Light came on yesterday.
Code is 2880 High-pressure system.
The current behaviour of the car aligns perfectly with the youtube video of an r56 with a high pressure fuel pump issue. Its idling very low rpm, sometimes stalling. Sometimes you can nail the throttle wide open and the car doesn't increase in RPM and just sounds barely alive spluttering at 700rpm.
New pump to be ordered today.
