New GP owner question...what is this??

Hi all,
Just picked up R53 GP #1899 and am loving it as much as I thought I would.

I have a history of building and driving old RWD cars (Long hood 911's) and hadn't driven FWD since my days back in a MKII VWGTI and Peugeot 205 GTI in the UK. I wasn't sure I wouldn't enjoy the handling but am having a blast! (my first car was a Mini 1100 and it brings it all back..)

My question of the day is...what the hell is this for?

Someone chime in if I'm wrong but I recall reading somewhere that it's an anchor point for a baby seat. Since the GP doesn't have a back seat, a baby seat would be placed in the passenger seat facing rearward.

That bar is NOT a stress bar but a retainer for luggage that may slide forward during rapid deceleration

As stated in posts. It is there to stop luggage from flying forward since there is no back seat but also to be used as a child seat restraint. It is well bolted to each side.
