Today's Cosmetic Project

The paint on the interior grab bars of my '02 R50 is pretty worn. I was looking into refinishing them as I did my dash and console tubes in Rustoleum Hammered finish paint - but was not in the mood to deal with all the disassembly and masking.

So after seeing leather covers on ebay, I decided to do it myself with the "hide of the Nauga".

I made some rough paper patterns, cut the "hide" and applied the pieces. The edges are all rolled under.

Supplies:

>Contact Cement
>"hide of the Nauga" - half a yard, available at JoAnn fabrics - called Upholstery Vinyl
> Scissors, Razor blade and small flatblade screwdriver.

As I applied the pieces, I used the razor and scissors to trim as I fit the cover. I used the flatblade to pry up the armrest so that I could tuck that cut edge under the pad.

1-Cut patterns.
2-Apply cement to door pulls.
3-While the cement is drying, cut the vinyl - just flip the pattern for each side.
4-Glue up the back of the vinyl.
5-Enjoy a beverage while the glue dries - do this in the driveway - the fumes are bad.
6- Apply the vinyl - vertical bar first. Be sure to roll the edges under that meet the interior surface.
7-Pull the vinyl taut as you apply it.
8- I also fit and cut a small piece to cover the last 3/4 in. of the bar on the other end of the arm rest pad.

Total job, both doors - less than 2 hours, start to finish. Just be sure to let the contact cement dry thoroughly.
