I saw brake caliper paint advertised on the web. I thought that this could look especially cool with red calipers behind my white wheels. Has anyone tried this stuff?

Also, can anyone out there with S Lites tell me whether you can really see the calipers behind those thick spokes?

Here's a helpful hint:

Instead of buying expensive "caliper paint", just go to your local autoparts store. Find a nice spray can of high-temp paint in the color of your choice. Next, go home and remove your wheel. Give the caliper a good cleaning with Simple Green and a wire brush. Rinse completely. Then tape off everything but the caliper. Spray the can of paint into a plastic bag or tray or something. Spray enough at a close angle to get it to pool up/liquify. Then use a small sponge brush to apply to the caliper. Give it two coats. Ta da. Painted calipers for the cost of one can of paint ($3) and a small sponge brush ($2). Much cheaper than $30+shipping for "caliper paint".

I recently got my brake pads changed (on a 3-series, not MINI0 at a local performance shop and got them to paint my calipers for free. They just used red engine block paint. Looks really cool and I didn't spend a ton of money.

Doh! This has happened to me twice, now. I'm a veteran of several other msg board communities, so I always do a search before starting a new thread. However, as great as MCO is, the message search feature blows.

I hope they can find a way to improve it. Thanks.

Hey, no prob, as long as you don't ask which is better, an MC or an MCS...

but you have to make sure to use the search feature in the 'forums' and then it helps to select 'all terms', not the default any.... i usually have good luck then..

I got mine from mossmini.com and used red paint behind white wheels. The effect is fantastic! I had a hard time not driving my "S" for 24 hours though. You are also going to need jackstands if you want to do all 4 wheels together. You can't put the wheels back on for 2 hours and for the best effect you need to use 3 coats with a 15 minute drying time between each coat.

I used one jackstand on the left front subframe and another on the left rear trailing arm. on the right side I used a floor jack on the rear end of the fron subframe. Three coats took me a total of 2 hours including waiting around between coats. chandlers4@attbi.com

Yeah, listen to Davbret...Save yourself some cash and drop by a good auto parts store to find some engine paint. That suff is very heat resistant and usually comes in blue, red or yellow. I did this to an Escort GT I had (don't laugh, it was fun while it lasted). Just make sure you REMOVE the calipers. I know one dude who tried to tape off the discs and that made quite a mess.

I did mine orange, to match the orange side lights. My MINI is yellow. I used One Shot sign painters paint and it holds up fine. If you're a bit of an artist you can use a very small brush and you don't even have to mask off. Just jack up one side at a time and take both wheels off. It's probably a 45 minute job.

This works, but you do have to repaint occasionaly. The 'caliper' paints are heat resistant, but they are usually a two part (epoxy) paint that when applied properly will resist damage from the acidic brake dust and last almost indefinitely. I spend the extra $20 myself and just do it once.
