Why do my rear reclining seats stop halfway?

When I decline my rear seats to make them flat so I can have a larger trunk area, I notice that the seats will stop at a 45% degree angle when I pull the strap to put the seats back up. I then have to pull up the strap again to get them to go all the to the normal position.

It is impossible to sit in the rear seats when they are at this angle, and it doesn't add much room to the back area. Does anyone have any idea why the seats stop at a 45% degree angle?

Safety? So they don't hurt someone or break the mechanism.

I have wondered this very same thing.
Only thing I can think of is maybe so you could sit in the back with your legs out the boot while you relax watching the sunset, etc?

So how does one fold the rear seat flat? Push it down twice?

One Pull of straps from when in upright position = they fold flat providing the head rest does not run into the front seat.

One Pull from straps when in the down position = seat comes up only half way and locks....IMO a PITA since you are standing outside of one side of the car and have to do this SIX times to get all the seats back up to sitting postion....

Once you bring it back up and it stops at 45 degrees, try pulling the loop, move it up just a bit more and let go of the loop. It'll catch at a different angle. They actually have 7 different angle settings. The two or three closest to the top are reasonable sitting positions. Why it goes all of the way to 45 degrees? You got me, but it could be useful if you have a bunch of stuff in the back, and still need to bring your friends along for a short trip or something. Think moving stuff and friends across town or something.

Also, to get it all of the way back up from flat down, just hold the loop out, and you'll be able to push it back to upright in one go.

Thanks for the info, I had thought it was just a single or two positions since I never tried this.
