Motoring in Northern Illinois?
Motoring in Northern Illinois?
Ok Chicago MINI Motoring Club... I need your help.
I'm planning a trip from Ann Arbor, MI to Waterloo, IA in a few weeks. I would like to take a couple of days with my '04 MCS JCW. Any suggestions for roads in northern Illinois (i.e. Lincoln Highway...) and places of interest along the way??
any help would be great!

Close to Chicago, Sheridan road along the lakefront is my favorite.
Route 20 out by Galena is very nice, hilly and twisty (by midwest standards).
I have been on a series small roads right along the Illinois/Wisconsin border that takes you all the way out to Galena, but I couldn't name them (I was following at the time).
If you are in the Chicago area on Saturday July 17th, you should stop by for this: http://www.chicagominiclub.com/2004/..._car_show.html

ernesto -
thanks for the suggestions!
I had Route 20 on my list, especially going into Galena. Something about ski resorts caught my attention, so there has to be a few hills nearby.
I would love to stop by for the show, but my friend's wedding is on 8/7.
thanks again, ken

Out in the Galena area there are two really great roads to motor on...
1. Blackjack Road - It's off of Route 20, just outside downtown Galena. The road twists, turns, rolls, dips, dives, has completely blind corners... Just be careful, there is always news about people wrecking and/or being killed on the road. I've driven the length of this road, all the way to whatever the small town it dumps you off in, and it is a joy (and a challenge) to drive. Just thinking about it makes me want to drive out there this weekend.
2. Stagecoach Trail - Again, just outside of Galena, I can't remember what street it's off of though. Only driven a short section of it, but it supposedly gets even hairier than Blackjack Road...which I didn't think was really possible in Illinois.
Around the Dubuque area there are some really good country roads that meander through farmland. Not so twisty or some of the stuff around Galena, but still nice for just cruising.

Steve,
thanks for the road info!!
I've pretty much decided I will spend the night in Galena, so it's good to know a few roads to try out while I'm there.
So far, I'll be taking I94 to chicago, either take Hwy 6 sw or Hwy 38 nw. Follow either route to Clinton, and then take Hwy 84 to Galena.
happy motoring! -ken
